No RAM without the EXB-SMPL installed?

So, I spoke with a Korg support tech today about adding RAM to my TR76 & was told that I MUST have the EXB-SMPL installed if I wish to add RAM. My understanding was that you can add RAM & manipulate samples on the PC side, as opposed to working with them internally on the keyboard interface.

Is there a danger in adding RAM without the expansion?

Not a problem at all. I had RAM installed without the EXB-SMPL option. The option card is only required to record/process/edit samples and audio input directly on the keyboard.

You can still load samples from a memory card into RAM without it. Definitely.

Absolutely you can fit ram to the LE and TR without the EXB-SMPL installed. This RAM can then be used to load samples.

However, without the EXB-SMPL installed you will not be able to perform any manipulation to samples. All samples loaded must be in Korg format, so without the EXB-SMPL loading .wav files (for example) becomes impossible.

It is also not possible to re-order samples without EXB-SMPL installed, so you will need to load them in the same order each time to ensure your sample indexes are correct.

Ultimately, if you have the RAM or can get it cheap, there's no reason not to install it. Go ahead :)

There are third party software solutions that can handle the sample conversion and keymapping.. like Awave Studio.
