Use combi mode.
There are already piano and string combis right there under the keyboard tab.
There may be other sounds but you can mute those tracks and then change the piano and strings to what ever sounds suit you the best and then mix the volumes of each on the mixer 1-8 tab..
As a matter of fact, combi A024 is called piano and strings and is already set to do what you want.
I like to go to the insert effects page and tweak things around a bit most usually to refine the sound to my liking also.

csteen's got it in one.
This is super basic stuff (changing from program to combi and understanding what each mode does.)
Is there something else you're wanting to do as well as the piano string C chord such as holding that chord and playing over it with a different sound?

Tommy,
I think in this case that a combi will serve you better.
Piano compositions, especially, need to be able to freely use damper pedal for one - in combi mode you can make it so the piano only will be sustained and the string accompaniment doesn't get cluttered up with held notes. Strings will sustain only those notes that are actually being held (hand) vs sustained (pedal). It's a nice effect.
You may also want to make it so that the string's volume is velocity controlled. You can even layer the string sounds in such a way that a more "chamber-ish" string plays at moderate volumes (0-110) and a fuller orchestral ensemble plays at loud volumes (111-127), and you can velocity cross fade in such a way that the ensemble size grows more "natually" into a fortissimo (ff), instead of making a hard switch between the sounds at some arbitrary volume.
