Successfully used audio track timestretch?

Does anyone have experience of succesfully using the sequencer timestretch facilities for audio tracks.
I seem to have a problem getting it to work - but maybe I don't even understand it properly.
Lets say I've a audio WAV file of drums at 180bpm - and I wanted to slow those down to 120bpm.
I set the region I'm playing to have a speed of 180bpm. Then I change the tempo to 120pm - and try using the Adjust Region to Song's Tempo - but nothing happened.
Although the documentation is sparse the impression I got was this would create a series of new WAV files with appropriate audio events to play this correctly.
Perhaps I've misunderstood. Any help much appreciated. thx
