Installing 2.0.2 failed, Kronos corrupted!

Post by laandodeman »

Please give me a clue guys. I tried to install 2.0.2 and these are the screens I got.

"updater version 2.0.2
Checksum error! Updat failed. Recovery may require format and full install'

What I did next was restart the Kronos. Then it says: System startup failed. Please disconnect any USB devices and restart"

No USB device is or was connected, except my USB with the updater files.

Have no clue what to do now. Kronos is not moving anymore. I NEED MY KRONOS FOR GIGS VERY SOON!!!

that's bad :(

did you try to start the Kronos without any usb stick attached?

if it still failed then you have to restore the system again. In the Parameter Manual at page 1156 is explained how to do this (it's not that hard). You have to attach an usb dvd drive to the kronos and use the recovery DVD from your Kronos.

I was afraid of that. My computer can't read the Kronos DVDs. No idea why. Months ago I asked Voerman (Korg NL) to find out why that could be. Never had a response.

It has nothing to do with a computer, you need to have a portable USB dvd Drive and attach that to the Kronos USB port.
Then put the DVD in that drive and start the recover proces.

Is there an alternative if you don´t have a portable DVD drive?

i'm afraid not.

do you have an idea how this happened?

in my case the updater copied the files and did a verify of the files before starting the actual upgrade, so in my thoughts it would be a rather safe update unless the power failed during the upgrade.

Can you recommend a dvd drive Quifster? I am afraid that when I go out buy one, it will not work for whatever reason.

Before updating, don't you start the Kronos WITHOUT a USB flash drive attached and then connect it when prompted?

no, i don't have an idea, it should be a class complient DVD drive (but as far as i know they all are class complient).

I've looked into this yesterday because i also want a dvd drive for reading akai discs directly. There is a thread on this forum where they discuss the different brands of usb dvd drives.

I might have done that. Would that have such dramatic consequences?

Probably. If you read the "update and restore guide" it spefically states to start the Kronos with NO USB devices connected. I think the Kronos works like older computers. It looks for a boot device at start-up which woud normally be the internal SSD, but I guess it will also look at any connected USB devices, just like PCs used to look for an "A:" drive which was usually the floppy drive. The "Update and Restore" PDF can help you resolve the issue, but you probably will need a USB DVD drive. I have an LG Portable Super Multi Drive which I bought at Fry's Electronics and it has worked fine. I don't think I spent more than $30 for it. It would be a good investment, since you can use it for backing up your Kronos data and I believe you can even burn audio CDs from your Kronos projects.

PS- "No USB devices connected" means no USB devices- especially the one with the updater files!

Update: bought a Samsung dvd drive (29 euro's, not too bad), and Kronos restored to 1.0.2 something. Phew!

Then again I tried to update to 2.0.2.

(When I did that, I realised that I did NOT have a usb connected when I first tried to update, only after the system asked me to. So something else has gone terribly wrong!)

First it went well.

But then the bar got stuck at 75% or so. WTF!?

Really this is not funny. Again, the Kronos fails me!

This is strange! If it installed the original OS without problems, why should it fail updating?

I know from such situations that it is important to stay cool. May sound silly, but I would just repeat the install. Maybe some USB-contact is a bit loose and causing casual problems or something weird as that.

Hi laandodeman,

I am very sorry to hear of the upgrade troubles.

I was glad to hear you were able to at least restore to 1.0.2.

Have you tried using a different USB stick for the 2.0.2 upgrade part?

Maybe try this:

1. Restore once again to 1.0.2
2. Format a different USB stick using Kronos.
3. Put the 2.0.2 installer files on this different USB stick.
4. Attempt the upgrade to 2.0.2

My thought is that if the upgrade to 2.0.2 has failed 2 times in a row with the same USB stick, it might be good to try a different one.
