Preload confusion

Post by mathieumaes »

I want to explore the extra EXs libraries on the disk. I read about unloading some samples to make room for the extras.

But, when I go to "Sample manage", I can see all EXs are loaded: EXs3 (Brass & Woodwinds), EXs4 (Vintage keyboards, just MONO) etc...

Does this mean those extra libraries are already loaded ? Or do KSC files in the extras folder contain more samples then the default preload.ksc ?

Also, what's the difference between "Virtual memory" and "RAM" ?
Old gig setup: Yamaha S90, Roland Fantom XR, Hammond XM-1, M-Audio Axiom 61
2011 gig setup: Korg Kronos 88

Some (but not all) samples from the EXs3,4,... are preloaded via Preload-KSC. If you load the KSCs from Extra, there are more - and some programs using these samples are in the additional PCGs in the extra folder.

Virtual Memory vs. RAM - if I remember correctly - applies to the samples which are streamed from SSD (SGX-1 and some drum samples). RAM is the portion (attack phase) which is really preloaded and therefore consuming RAM. VM tells you about the real size of the samples including the portions coming an demand from the SSD while playing.

This thread basically asks the same questions as in 2 other threads (How to uninstall an EXs and I don't understand what's factory and what's extra).

When you look at the extra folder on the internal drive, what are already loaded and what are extra? If you did load them how would you unload them?
How much memory do these take, when I loaded the ex3, it somehow unloaded samples like the German piano which no longer worked?

An explanation on how all this works would be helpful. I want to be prepared for additional libraries but this understanding is the first step.

If Rich did a video (like the cx3 video) to demonstrate loading, unloading both internal and additional libraries, what banks are used when they are loaded and use of memory it would really clarify this subject.
