Hey guys,

I'm new to this, so please bear with me! I'm having too much trouble setting up MIDI properly with my M50, ua 25 ex interface, and Pro Tools 10.

Before I continue, just know that for the past 2 days I've been taking a lot of time out to the learn about concept of MIDI and how it works. In addition, I've read an entire book on Pro Tools itself, but even the chapter on MIDI hasn't given me the answers I needed.

Here's what's going on:

1) I attached all cables properly
2) Turned off local control on M50
3) Ran MIDI studio set up and routed my M50 to my UA 25 EX
4) Created a MIDI, Aux, and Audio tracks
5) For the input on the MIDI track, selected 'all channels' and for the output 'channel 1'
6) On the Aux track, selected Inputs 1-2 (UA 25 Ex, stereo) and selected Bus 1-2 for the output
7) On the audio track, selected Bus 1-2 for the input, and for the output I selected my UA 25 EX as I did with the input for the Aux track

When I go to record MIDI or even play the keyboard, there's no sound response at all. With local control off, there is no response by the Aux meter. With local control on, there is a response by the Aux meter. This is all happening in Program mode, mind you.

Am I missing something simple here? Is there more that needs to be set up on the M50 itself to get it working properly?

I remember years ago, when I used a Roland Juno-d with Cakewalk Homestudio, in order to record MIDI I needed to import a text file of some sort with all the patch names. Then I'd have to select the patch name of the instrument I wanted to play off Homestudio, rather than the keyboard itself. I believe I had to put it in another mode know as "performance," instead of the normal "patch" mode.

If anyone could give me some advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

never done with m50, but done with m3 without any problem...

you basically are trying to connect m50 and daw via audio/midi and recording both audio and midi together from keyboard and/or send midi from daw and recording audio playbacked by m50, right?

i have done this setup

M3 MIDI OUT > EDIROL MIDI IN > MIDI TRACK on my DAW
M3 MIDI IN > EDIROL MIDI OUT > MIDI TRACK on my DAW
M3 L/R > EDIROL INPUT > AUDIO TRACK on my PC

no aux used.

i select on m3 to transmit on channel 1 (program mode) and my track in daw to receive on midi channel 1. m3 receive in omni mode (listen all channel).

just arm midi track and if needed audio track, press rec and playing keyboard i have midi and audio togheter.

when want just to playback midi from and record audio, just arm audio track, set m3 in slave mode e press play on daw.

I believe in Pro Tools you need - rather than a MIDI track - an INSTRUMENT track. And, then you need to put a VSTi or RTAS plug-in on the instrument track. Then the M50 will trigger the sounds of whatever plug-in you've placed there.

Alternately, you can place the M50 editor plug-in on the instrument track, which will interact with the M50. Then you can create a stereo audio track and route the L+R audio outputs from the M50 to the inputs on your UA 25 - and, in turn, configure the audio track in Pro Tools to receive the audio from the UA 25.

I actually got the MIDI working finally, and if not by some miraculous act of god then it was the simple fact that the keyboard only responds when the MIDI track is armed for recording.

Now that I finally have THAT working, it seems that because I have my MIDI hooked up properly, I can't play my keyboard EXCEPT when either a MIDI or audio track is armed. And this occurs regardless of whether or not I have local control on. This isn't that much of a big deal to me, as it doesn't render me unable to work, but it's something that's got me scratching my head.

actually, now them i'm getting into it, this is quite annoying! I can't play my keyboard during playback, thus not being able to try out new ideas! anyone have any ideas?

that's really strange... have you set the engine control to IN , EXT or BOTH?

You mean the playback engine in Pro Tools, or a setting on the M50?

Page 84 of the Owner's Manual: Global P1: MIDI - make sure the "Local Control On" box is checked.



If the box needs to be checked, do so. And then, make sure you use the dropdown in the upper right-hand corner of the page and select "Write Global Setting"
