Kronos UI too small for my eyes?

Post by r010159 »

Hello all!

I am seriously thinking about purchasing a Kronos 61. But I have some reservations. One very impotant concern is my eyesight. My eyesight is a bit worse than 20/20. This is after correction through glasses. I understand the items on the Kronos screen can be quite small.

There is no store in my city that has a Kronos in stock. So I need to ask all of you this question. Will the items and letters on the screen be too small for me to use for an extended period of time, like for programming the synth? What do you think?

Thank you for your responses! :)

Hi there - and welcome to KF!

This topic has been widely discussed and I guess it's a highly subjective matter.

I think there may be a get-out for you though - in November, Korg is scheduled to release their Kronos Editor for use on a computer. I suspect this will be more easy on the eye for an extended period of time when programming.

I am used to an OASYS screen so the Kronos seems small to my eyes but it is much higher quality (think iPhone compared to an old Samsung or Nokia).

But with the editor shouldn't be an issue in the long run...

Just to give some perspective. These days I wear glasses for working on my computer but don't the rest of the time. I was a little concerned also, but I've found I can comfortably read the Kronos screens with no issues without glasses.

I have an M50 and Triton Extreme which also have quite large screens but the Kronos (tested in a store) font is smaller. However, I did not have real problems, sometimes I bent a bit over to see it better, but I was not used to all the info on the screen which probably helps too in the long run.

And as said by Cello, the editor probably prevents that you have to look at the Kronos screen for hours.

I have use of one eye and it's badly beaten because of the lack of sight in the other, I was also concerned. I wear glasses all the time and I'm rocken!
Once the the editor is released it really should be of no concern.. get it!

Thank you all for your quick replies! Ii just needed some perspective due to my below normal eyesight. That editor for the computer sounds like the ticket for me.

Let's hope that the editor won't use the same size fonts or graphics..

There's a risk that it will look as small on the computer screen as on the Kronos. Look at the editors for the M3 or Radias: a bit on the tiny side..

Can only echo the sentiments here - the resolution is good, as is the viewing angle.

My eyesight ain't exactly brilliant, but I can see the display perfectly, both in the studio and on stage.

Rumours of the dodgy display are vastly over-rated imho.

You are one of many, concern with the
monitor resolution, it is a problem for
many user (me included ) I hope Korg will
do something about it , not only with the editor
but with the keyboard interface, there 's no
need to change all the pages but the combi
and program title page should be change,
why not split in two the display of those pages ?

Strangely enough, while without glasses the small font is blurry (out of focus) due to my aging eyes.

I manage to navigate very well during live performance. (i.e. performance does not suffer from the small font.)

But, with that said, I use a pair of Reader Glasses (1.5 X) when editing sounds or other complex programming in the studio.

KRONOS SCREEN

Post by DavyP »

I personally do not have a problem with the screen. Its a reasonable size and high resolution. Some of the text is quite small in places (e.g. names of programs in combis) but useable at a push.

I suppose when at home/studio you can use the forthcoming computer editor/plugin to program the keyboard to your hearts desire.

Then when playing live you will have all your sounds, edits and settings saved in your set lists which are very easy to read and select from the touch screen or by foot pedal...

While its a bit small (which it has to be to get all the information on that 8" screen)... the resolution is excellent! I admit its a bit small for my tastes, but if its at all possible, I would love to see some sort of OS alteration (or hardware add-on) that would allow a USB port to plug into an external monitor. I don't know if that's possible - maybe a combination of OS modification and hardware adapter - but that wouldl be the ultimate "fix".

I read the default VGA port is bypassed so the LCD screen has its own hardware/software coupling. On the other hand, I assume the editor will be the most favourable mean of long time usage.

I have to agree here. I'm also one of the visually ill-equipped but I don't really have that many problems with the screen. I don't think anybody is going to be deeply tweaking mid song in a live show so your set lists, progs and combis should be good enough. I know I'm going to just run with the set lists. Less of a chance of miscuing a sound on the fly. That is once I get my leslie speed/program change switch dilemma figured out.

I probably see worse than anybody in this thread, and glasses don't do much to help my situation either. I was able to see the Kronos well enough to get around ok in the store. (I haven't bought one yet.) The names of the patches are a bit problematic, but they usually have an image of either the type of synth engine you're using or the type of instrument that is being sampled (HD-1), and basic editing of most of the engines doesn't seem like it would be too painfully difficult, based on the graphical interface of most of them.

That being said, I would not want to do much 'serious' work on this board, where editing of parameters and stuff would be involved. It's too bad that virtually no synth maker seems to give a rat's ass about accessibility. My $400 Android tablet has an HDMI port, but they can't manage to squeeze such a thing into a $3000 synth?
