Is this hissing noise normal ? (Beginner question)

Post by DrHoo »

Hello all. I have had my EMX1 for a few weeks & it is a second hand unit.

I am enjoying it very much & have questions ,i'll be searching the forum for answers but this is just a little burning question i have to ask.

When i turn the master volume up ,i can hear hissing & it is audiable from about the 9'0 clock position & up.

My question is simply ...Is that normal with this unit ?

I can hear it with the tube gain completely down & in stop mode.
For the record ,the first thing i did with the unit when i got it was to restore factory settings.
Thankyou. :?:

yes, when you turn the master volume up it amplifies the ambient hiss in the tubes. Most audio equipment does this, but its a bit more noticeable with the tribes due to the tubes, and especially if you wear headphones.

Your box isnt faulty. Only if you can hear a hiss over the music, then id be a bit worried. :D

Many thanks for taking the time there. I find that on recording ,i have to use a noise reduction to get rid.

But thanks for answering directly. Concluded.

Well the tribes are known to have a fair bit of hiss, it annoys some people endlessly, but it doesnt bother me much, although it can be quite noticeable at certain times.

Some guys who have upgraded there tubes have said it reduces hiss a lot, but I cant verify that so dont take my word for it. There is a post about upgrading tubes if you search, might have something in there.

Slighly increasing the tube gain (and reducing volume) will lower this noise (don't increase the gain too much to avoid unwanted distortion).
