MIDI-OX maps for KOPro external keyboard control

Post by RichF »

Hi everyone,

I've been working on some controller maps for the Kaossilator Pro, and I wanted to share them with you. When used with the MIDI-OX program, these will allow you to play the KOPro using an external MIDI controller. If you don't already have MIDI-OX, it's a free download at www.midiox.com , and it's a really indispensable program for all things MIDI.

Here are the downloads:

http://www.filedropper.com/kopro6-octavemap
http://www.filedropper.com/kopro8-octavemap

EDIT: These links are outdated... To get the maps, just email us at product_support@korgusa.com. Thanks!

There are a couple of caveats:

1. The maps are ONLY accurate in the key of C, with the scale set to chromatic, and the note range set to FULL.
2. The FULL octave range varies from Program to Program. Be sure to pick either the 6-octave or 8-octave map, depending on which Program you’re playing.
3. Playing legato doesn't work. Once the KOPro receives a note-off message, it will stop whatever notes you’re holding down. There is no last-note message priority.
4. The maps are not perfect, and could certainly be improved. Please feel free to do so, and post your results!

Thanks, and enjoy.

Thank you for helping us - I found that program website a few days ago and saved the link (and I think I posted it on another thread). Contrary to most (but not all) the folks with MIDI concerns, I primarily want to run things OUT of my K-Pro and into external devices, primarily the Dave Smith Evolver and two older Electribes. Will it work correctly in this direction? I read the Pro Editor manual (I have ordered the Pro but it's still on the way) and got the feeling I can probably send stuff out to the Evolver more easily because it is a sequencer/synth. I read the MIDI portions of both manuals (Evolver and Pro Editor) and I'm not too smart but I think I might be able to pull it off......advice is still highly appreciated!

The Midiox link didn't work because it contained a comma at the end. Remove that and the link will take you to their site.

Hi 4dnightmare,

These maps will only affect MIDI data received by the KOPro, not data sent from it. The Evolver and Electribes should work just fine being controlled by the KOPro, with no map needed. While you're in External Control mode (Shift + 8 ), the pad is sending note data. While outside of External Control, it's sending MIDI CC messages.

That's good to hear, thank you! I kinda got that from the manual, but it's good to hear it from you. I love creating patterns and running them through interesting Evolver sound settings.....

Hi Rich.

Thanks for trying to get round the problem.

A couple of points.

Doesn't work on Leads, (A plays the next C above ) though Acoustics and Basses are fine as long as I reset the note range to FULL each time I change the program.

Note off doesn't work either.

I do understand that the KO-Pro was not originally designed for keyboard players but for loops and samples. But, now the X Axis is used to control pitch, playability and MIDI note on/off conformity have become an issue, as you may have noticed!

You seem to be well in at Korg. Any chance of a firmware upgrade in the near future?

Hi Rich,

1. Which sounds use the 6 Octave- and which use the 8 Octave-Patch?

2. I found an error in your 8 octave-map:
Note on min 34 and min 35 have a max-note of 36. This must be wrong!

Thanks for the Maps! It must have been a hard work to create all the mapping-entries!
Did you map it by trial and error or did you have a map from korg?

I appreciate it very much that you take care of the Korg-Customers and listen to their wishes!

Do You know if an OS-Update is planned/on the run?

Regards,

First an apology

The note off works fine. My Axiom 25 sends a #9* nn 00 instead of the proper #8* nn nn message which works fine with the maps. It just turns the volume off, not the note! That was the default setting. I'll have to see if I can fix it.

The 8-octave map is actually 7 octaves. 108 - 24 = 84 / 12 = 7!

I've been through the voices to see which ones are 6 and 7 respectively and below are my provisional results. I tested this with a one octave sequence from Cubase. I have yet to test it on the full range, but I don't foresee any changes. As you can see there are some which didn't conform to either the 6 or 7 octave map.

I'm working on a conversion script in VB. It's a lot more complicated than I first thought. Perhaps upgrading the firmware might not be so simple either.

Until then, if ever, I hope this helps.

@englishhermit:

Thanks for your Investigations!

How shall Your VB-program work?
I am working on a VST-plugin which you can just put in your DAW.
So you can play the KPro by an external Midi-Keyboard AND you can simply play midi-note-clips in your DAW which are mapped through the VST-Plugin and output to the KPro.
I am working with Ableton Live 8 and my first tests were fine!

-----

@RichF:

How many octaves have the rest of the sounds?

It's a pitty that not all sounds - when set to full range - have the same octave range!

Do you have a mapping-info for 4 Octaves?

Thanks! - roxxx303

As it stands, I can record the performance MIDI data to Cubase and play it back perfectly. I can correct timing errors but I cannot edit the note data except by using the List Editor. It doesn't appear on the Key Editor because it isn't standard note on/off data.

The VB program will convert the internal pitch data into note on/off data so it can be recorded, edited and played back again in the DAW. It is not designed to be used as a keyboard controller, just to edit the data from the KO-PRO as I want to be able to tidy up my XY pad performance. I could use my keyboard and the modulation wheel through the DAW instead, but it is the simplicity of the XY pad that appeals to me.

So far it works for a single instrument over one octave note range and both ways in Ionian and Dorian scales, not using mapping, but some simple arithmetic. I didn't want to use mapping which means changing the scale and note range for playback, but keep the KO-PRO in the mode in which I recorded.

The maths gets more complicated once I change the range or instrument. So the next job is to capture the performance data and export it to a spreadsheet so I can have a close look at the relationships. I think it may have to be done with look up tables instead.

I don't have access to the KO-PRO tech spec so I have to adopt this approach and analyse the data. It's a challenge but I used to work as a data analyst before I retired so it's fun too.

Does the machine control me or do I control the machine?
