Korg 01W Amazing Sounds

Post by Venatte »

Does somebody know if the 01W Rack Module sounds(voices & programas) are exactly the same ones as those of the keyboard version. I am amazed by this video as well as by the player.

I want to buy the rack so bad to added to my arsenal, I find the sounds awesome with so much warmth.

Yes, the rack sounds are identical.

Keep in mind, i think he's using a PCM card there - i didn't recognize some of the sounds, specifically the electric guitars (like at 3:20). i'm sure most of the other sounds on this video are in the 01R/W's ROM. not sure which card this is... there aren't that many of them. The 01/W PCM and PCG cards are hard to find these days, and still are somewhat expensive to buy if you do find them. Been looking for the piano card for a while, and haven't been able to find it.

The presets in the 01/W and 01R/W are exactly the same, but adding a ROM card into the back of the unit gives the user 2MB more sample ROM and 100 new programs/combinations. my suggestion is to search for all the PCM cards, and figure out which one has the over-driven guitar sounds on it, and make sure you aren't too attached to those sounds. 01/W presets really are phenomenal though, definitely worth getting the rackmount.

I recognize most of those sounds, and pretty much they're the factory presets. The guitar around 3:20 sounds like Prog B14 FeedBacker; the pipe organ & choir I think is Combi A67 The Phantom, for example.

No doubt, it's still a sweet sounding synth, even after all these years!

My Favourite Korg synth of all time, the sounds are very warm on the 01W,I had 2 keyboards at one time it was my one time Rock for gigs, but sold them, now only have the Rack version,Many gigging Keys players I know still use an 01W because of its rugged build and wide range of superb sounds.I think Stephen Kay had input in creating some of the factory Patches.
Pianos sound a little dated now,but i still use the 01R/W for Strings and orchestral timbres.
I'm suprised Korg haven't replicated 01W within the Legacy VST collection yet,The 01W was far better than the M1 and Wavestation,I hoped maybe they would introduce this Synth into the Oasys engines

Is it really dated? I still think it has a very distinctive sound. Tweak it a bit and it's still usable today....well, if ya shove it back in the mix a bit. :P

I guess its down to tastes I suppose which change over time,I still use the 01W for some strings and Pads because I prefer the tone which is a bit lofi(verging on Warm I suppose for a digital synth)

Pianos for me don't really sound up to much nowadays on the 01,but thats perhaps because I prefer the Piano sounds on the Oasys,so its a preference thing, certainly most other sounds are useable as I wouldn't still retain my Rack
