midi controllers and functions

That means it doesn't have samples/programs of its own. In otherwords workstations and synthesizers are better than midi controllers.

MIDI controllers, either midi keyboards or midi pedals, etc. are simply devices that send a command to something else, via MIDI protocol (language). They are just that, tools to work with this electronic language.

These commands has to arrive to a destination (sound module, other keyboard, computer programs, samplers, etc) that will produce the sounds. MIDI controllers can be also used for controlling DAWs in studios.

So, MIDI controllers are only to control. Workstations, synths are controller with the sound generator included.
