Hello Everybody,

I'd like to have a combi where I have a guitar that plays normally without splits,etc. I then would like to be able to play a chord for instance, and be able to press and hold a pedal (doesn't matter if it would be footswitch or damper) and another program like strings would play on different track, sustained until I released the pedal. The use of the pedal should have no effect on the guitar prog track.

Here's the twist that I'm really looking for...

1. The second program would be silent while the pedal is not depressed
so I can play guitar only parts.
(Described above)

2. The notes that should sound on the strings prog should only be the notes that were down while the pedal was being depressed, and once the pedal was down, the strings there were down at that moment would sound sustained, but any additional notes that were played after the pedal was 'all the way down' would not sound. (you could hit a chord, quickly press and hold down the pedal, keep playing lead until the next chord change, let up on the pedal, hit the next chord, rinse and repeat...

If this whole idea sounds stupid and there's a better, different approach, please, feel free to let me know...

Also, if there is a solution to accomplish this with multiple keyboards, where different keyboards would take the place of different programs in a combi. (This actually would be a more ideal solution for me)

I'm sure there is a way to do this in KARMA mode, but I'm trying to think of a simple solution. How many chord changes do you have in your song? If it's not more than 8, you can use the PADs, as they can play other channels. For example:

You are playing your full range guitar on MIDI channel 1 (the whole keyboard).

In the next two slots (typically channel 2 and 3), you can assign the same guitar program in the second slot and strings in the third slot. However, assign them both to Channel 2. To do this in Combi mode:

Press the TIMBRE PARAMETER tab at the bottom of the screen. Make sure it is on the MIDI sub-tab.

Assign the second and third sounds to Channel 2.


Each PAD can play eight notes. To assign them from that same Combi mode:

Press the PLAY tab to bring you to the top screen (out of the MIDI page).

Press the EQ/VECTOR/CONTROL tab and press the sub-tab, PADS, at the far right of the screen.

At the top of the screen, next to each number, there is an arrow that you can touch to change the pad's MIDI channel. Set however many you want to Channel 2.

To make a chord, press the PAD ASSIGN button, which is at the far left of the keyboard, next to KARMA ON/OFF and LATCH. Enter up to eight notes and just touch the pad of your choice.

Go to the 5:50 time mark of THIS VIDEO, if you don't understand.

You will need to hold the Pad down to sustain it. To keep these settings, SAVE the combi!




Another way is to split the keyboard by having your lead guitar on the top notes and having a duplicate of that guitar and string layer, on the lower half of the keyboard. Use the same setup as above, but set all three sounds (2 guitars and strings) to Channel 1. To split the keyboard, press the MIDI FILTER/ZONES tab and make sure you are on the KEYBOARD ZONES sub-tab.

An easy way to add strings with the Foot Switch is go to GLOBAL mode.

Select the CONTROLLERS/SCALES tab and assign the Foot Switch to KARMA ON/OFF.

Now, go back to the COMBI mode.

Select the TIMBRE PARAMETER tab and go to the WAVE SEQ/KARMA sub-tab. Right under the "KARMA Timbre Off Control", press the selection arrow, under the Strings slot, and select KARMA OFF TIMBRE OFF.

Pressing the Foot Switch will turn the Strings on and off. However, if you are hearing unwanted KARMA notes, press the KARMA tab and right under "GE Setup", you will see "A, B, C, D" modules. Next to each one is a little RUN box. Uncheck it to make sure the modules aren't running.

Your Guitar and String on/off layer should work normally. You can adjust the pitch of the split layers by going to TIMBRE PARAMETER tab, then PITCH sub-tab.

SAVE the Combi to keep these settings!

I really was looking for this feature to not require any preprogrammed chords...

I know Karma can be set up in some really clever ways, (Manual Advance, Etc) to provide functionality that is hard to believe possible on a workstation.

Everyday I learn somthing new on my Oasys.

Honestly, I don't know if it even can be done, but exactly what I'm trying to achieve is a 'pedal activated, leading edge triggered, note latch for a specific track, with any notes played after the latch is triggered being discarded, until the latch is released by releasing the pedal.'

I think the real trick here would be to discard any new notes on that track after the latch is triggered.

This would give you a method of creating 'snapshots' of the notes at that moment the pedal is depressed.

If this can be done, it would be like having another hand when you need it.

Plus, it would make the process completely hands-free!

I really think it would be very effective for live improv environments.

I've been thinking about this for quite awhile, and it really seems like it should/might be possible to do this...

Imagine this scenario:

you're playing a combi with a killer bass line on your left hand,
(Drums Rockin), a flaming guitar solo is burning out from your right hand,
building up to a frenzy, all of a sudden, you softly press a chord, press and hold the damper, and rez-strings fill the room, you continue with the wicked guitar through numerous, spontaneous, musical moods. All the while your bass never misses a beat.

Everyone listening either thinks you are playing with a sequence or grew another hand.


(might even be able to set the velocities for the tracks so the string track can be triggered without sounding the guitar track)

Please if this sounds like a dumb idea, or I'm just thinking about this all wrong, please let me know...
