newbie help: choosing a mixer

Post by doohdoohhead »

Hello all,

I am totally new to recording. And I would greatly appreciate your advice on a couple of questions I have!

Can anyone recommend a decent inexpensive mixer? I would like the mixer for live use ( for a rock band set up) as well as for recording.

Do I still need an audio interface if I buy a mixer? (if I want to record to my Mac using garage band)

ANyway, thanks for the help and anything else you may want to throw in is more than welcome!

If you don't need powered mixer, the Behringer mixers are inexpensive, and do the job, I have two.
I also have an Alesis Multimix Firewire 8, it was a couple hundred bucks, but the firewire drivers are not so good, at least the first few attempts.

Something like this; http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHXENYX1204FX for example, is very affordable, and has good features.
These; http://www.zzounds.com/item--PHOHB12PLUS get good reviews also.

If you're recording audio into your Mac, you could use the Mixer as the interface, I do that, a good soundcard is needed though.

I hope this helps.

I am a very senior citizen (also new to recording--for my own pleasure). I use a small, inexpensive mixer from DAK.com ($69.95) I think. I don't know if this is what you are looking for--but it works for me.
