Switching combis

Post by mocando »

I'm using a couple of combis for a specific song, but while performing, the sound is in the release stage and I hit the pedal for Combi Up. Then the sound abruptly mutes. If I play again I can hear the sounds of the combi I switched to, but I would like them to mix with the previous combi, since the sound is faint, but it can still be heard.

Even more if I use reverb filters. Switching the combi is like shutting down the keyboard. Sudden Silence.

Is there a way to avoid that to happen? :?

I don't think so. But I always felt there should be an option to retrigger the notes when changing combis, to make the gap as small as possible. But I often end up making the switch in time with the music, making the pause a little longer to fit with the rest of the music.

Thing is, when just muting and unmuting tracks within the combi it doesn't happen, so I will make my combis broather and include as many instruments as I need. i just need to find a way to mute and unmute a track using an external trigger. That will do the job.

Any ideas?

if you're only using two combis per 'song', or whatever, Its probably most efficient just to use a second controller keyboard connected to your M50. provided both are big enough, you could even split them to provide three or four different parts for a single song.

set the controller to a different MIDI channel, and then set programs for they keyboard to respond to that channel in the combi setup.

jeje we are in the same channel, X-Trade. I just ordered a Yamaha KX49.
I tried the other day with my PA50 connected through MIDI and it works flawlessly.

The trouble having lots of different patches within a combination is that many of the patches depend on effects. So you'll run out of effects pretty fast. I'm using a footboard for changing patches, and it's working great.

well, I'm actualy using my TR which only has one insert effect (and two masters, no total). But i am also using some external gear (my Radias, and a Virus B)... its all about prioritising effects. in a life situation the reverb is often not necesary, and if you have something external, like a kaoss pad or some stereo delay rack, then you can eliminate the delays from the programs too (most of the time).

its all part of being a keyboardist - preparing sets and combis and sequences and programs in order to work best using the gear available, rather than taking the easy route and just saying 'copy all the effects from this program, and all the effects from that one too'. you have to rationalise it. you will also find that many of the programs are using the same or similar sets of effects in which case you can get them to share effects...

even using a footboard or something else to send program changes, there will still be a break between loading combis. its just the nature of the system, that pause is always there, just like it takes time to load a program on your computer. This is what the opening post was talking about anyway.
so there are always workarounds.. although I wouldn't really call them workarounds, they are more just different techniques to do the same thing. Thats the thing with KORG's boards, instead of holding your hand the whole time, you get a set of tools to use how you wish. like having a programming language on your PC rather than just having to use a program that someone wrote for you - infinitely more flexible.

I agree X-Trade. I think I will try to get the most of a single combi, for any single song, spreading the different sound on the M50 keybed and the controller, that way I will avoid having to switch a combi or dealing with the touchscreen to unmute a track. Definitively that "pause" while performing is neither fun nor elegant.
