My last Korg was a T3, now looking at the M50

Yes you read that correctly. My last Korg product was a T3 workstation with 8MB of ROM baby. I bought it brand new the day I graduated from high school in '91 with the money I received as a graduation present about 18 years ago! Loved the thing until about 8 years back when I switched to vintage instruments for live jazz & rock bands. Had a Fender Rhodes for a long time, now my only keyboard is a Nord Electro which I love. I recently dusted off the T3 only to remember that several buttons had broken, system battery was dead, etc. So I donated it to a local music school. Well when I saw my old T3 it peaked my interest in what entry-level workstations are available these days. I am in the market for a +/- $1000 board. Looked at the Juno G, low end Fantom, considered a used & blemished Triton Extreme and seem to be feeling most excited & comfortable about the possibilities of the M50. The electro will still be my main board for playing live. I am looking for a workstation for my home studio that has great sounds, is inspiring and also somewhat easy to use. Any opinions 8)

Just bought an M50 from a guy who upgraded to an M3, comes with the Karma software which I am excited to explore, but am going to start out learning the M50 from the ground up on its own and then move onto exploring the possibilities of working with Karma/Computer since it has been a while since I have used a workstation. Looking forward to being a part of the board. Cheers :D

Excellent! It's a very user-friendly board, you'll know it inside and out in no time :D

I'll go along with that!

Up until about 12 months ago, my experience was with pretty much with pianos only.

Since then I've bought, experimented with (and then sold), quite a few keyboards.

Although I've grumbled about the 'parameter guide' situation (that's another thread on this forum) I've found that the M50 is easily
the best one to just play about with & have fun!

I'm a long way from being an expert on it yet - and I daresay I'll be a nuisance asking questions that I should have worked out,
but there are a lot of very generous people on this forum who are prepared to give you the benefit of their knowledge.

Enjoy it, and any problems you have you'll find an answer to here!
It truly is an excellent piece of kit - I actually enjoy it more than my Motif XS, which is saying something!

Before you decide, play both the M50 and the M3.

The keybed of the 61-key M50 will probably disapoint you... compared to your T3.

Easy fix for that .. get the m50-88. The keybed is solid as a rock and the action is really good .. ie. piano-like.

True....but some people who play live may not want to lug around an 88-key.

I'm mainly a piano player, and I was looking for an 'electric' piano - ie: weighted keys etc, that was seriously good, & seriously portable.

What I found was the M50-88... not only a great keybed and great piano, but is as light, or lighter, than any comparable offerings.

Not only a 'lightweight' stage piano, but also an instrument that gives you soooo much more!

The action on the M3 vs. the M50 are different but I wouldn't say the M50 disappointed me. My Triton still has a better keybed than the M3 but the M50-88 is top notch and the action on my M50-73 was VERY fast and very good. It's not a cheap fatar-like keybed. And I'm thinking now that I liked my M50 keybed more than my M3. Play them both with headphones on (drowns out the clackity clak of the keys) and you won't notice much difference. But if you're looking for weighted keys, the M50 and M3 use the same keybed and it is AWESOME.
