Combi/sequencer questions

Post by BetaMark »

All,

I want to be able to use my M-50 with my software sequencer (in this case, Cubase 4.5) such that I can record successive MIDI tracks in order to build a complete musical arrangement using the M-50 sounds.

after setting everything up as per Korg's instructions, I find that when I choose a Combi and play the keyboard, MIDI data is being sent to multiple channels at once, as indicated by the flashing MIDI channel numbers in the M-50 plugin editor.

For instance, it might send data to MIDI channels 1 through 8 simultaneously, then perhaps skip a few of channels and also be sending to 12 through 14, etc. It makes little if any difference which MIDI track I choose to play within the sequencer, but i see more variation depending on the Combi I choose.

The closest I've been able to get to what I think should be happening is if I choose one of the InitCombis. In this case, choosing to work with a given track in the sequencer will send MIDI data to the corresponding channel within the M-50 editor. But even then, channels 1 and 2 always seem to be receiving data no matter what else i do.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

when your combi or sequence is selected press page select, go to P3 Track Param, and there you can set up witch tracks are on witch midi channel. hope this helps

Jugo,

Thanks, this helped me get on the right track.

Just one more question: How can I get combis with Arps and drum tracks, etc. into Cubase as MIDI tracks? It's easy enough to record these on the M-50's internal sequencer, so is there a way to export this file and then open it in Cubase such that it will retain the proper mapping for the M-50 sounds?

conversely, I've tried playing combis 'live' into cubase, but the software sequencer doesn't seem to pick up the MIDI data from the Arps, etc. I would presume there could also be issues with syncing MIDI clocks between the M-50 and Cubase when using this approach.

I've searched through this forum as well as Korg's own documentation, but have not found much info on this subject.

try saving your sequence as a midi file on the SD card and then transfer it to your pc and load it to cubase, then just assign the appropriate settings with the VST editor for the sequence.. dont know if you got what I meant x) Haven't done this btw

Hi,

First of all I apologize for my approximativ english, i'm writing from switzerland.

I thought i was incompetent, but saving a sequence on SD card and then open the file in an internal sequencer is the only solution i found to record the arpeggiators and the drum track on an external sequencer (logic in this case).

So i'm asking the same question: wich configuration to record arpeggiators and drum track on an EXTERNAL sequencer?!

Without this possibility it's just impossible to use this workstation as a workstation but just as a toy...

Does a solution exist?
Best regards :)

in global mode on most korg keyboards and workstations there should be an option to set the MIDI out to be either Pre or Post TG (Tone Generator).

Meaning, if it is set to post, then it will output the arps, if it is set to pre, it will only output the global channel.

keep in mind that the keys you press on the keyboard and joystick/switches you operate will always be output on the global channel in their pure form regardless, so its best to have your arp on a separate MIDI channel in order to get it out from the basic key data.
