Did you completely erase your EMX when you got it?
If not, what percentage of your current 256 presets are still the originals presets?

100% original patterns in my sets

I hear some of the preset patterns and songs on the MX when I got it but not all of them...this was enought for me

I erase them all the first day and start from zero

this is my policy with new synths, part due to a "phylosophic" thinking about being original and part because in 99% of the cases the presets SUCKS BIG TIME!

same for the samples on the SX...they´re seriously CRAP!...the patterns too, and much worse than the ones I hear on the MX...

New patterns only!

everything from scratch, both emx and esx... in fact first thing I did when I got esx was clear the memory and develop a new sample library from scratch(and my sample library on the pc)

I have the original presets on there but I overwrite them as I make new patterns.. they're only there cause I'm too lazy to delete them.

so far i started at the last pattern and am working my way back. whenever i get to the presets i will delete them as i come to them. i've been trying to use some of the sounds as a reference, since i'm still new to my machine, and i try to emulate some of the sounds just to see how they were made. it's helped me learn a bit but i still have a lot more to learn hehe

To say all of the preset patterns and or samples suck is nonsense. Some of the preset patterns on the ESX & EMX are outstanding and I would wager better than what most users ultimately create on their own. That being said, I do create my own patterns and use a lot of my own samples, but I also use many of the drum samples that came with the ESX. Why? Because some of them sound damn good. Obviously I have no need for that bitch going "oooooh yeah" but there are some kick drum samples on there that pack more punch than any other drum machine I have ever used. I will occassionally use a drum pattern as a gude to build around and then gradually rewrite the sequence as my own pattern develops. Erasing everything on a new machine as soon as you get it is really only doing yourself a disservice. The presets are a great tool to help new users really understand the capabilities of the machine.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to "man-up" and admit they use the presets, at least some extent. In the words of Neil Peart as sung by Geddy Lee "All this machinery making modern music can still be open hearted, not so coldly charted. It's really just a question of your honesty, yeah your honesty!"

when I first got my emx i played with the presets for about a month...
just mainly to learn the basics...but I dont think I ever really recorded down or used any of the presets in a song..i remember I had to come on this forum and search "how to erase emx presets" ....I thought the esx presets were horrible, and I erased those ASAP...

I've erased probably 80% of the presets, and kept about 20% as a source of inspiration, or because there's a particular sound or pattern I like.

If I hear something I like, or something interesting, I hang on to it, so I can pull it apart and find out how they did it.

We sometimes use say a hihat pattern from a preset and build a new song around it, but mostly we will build stuff pretty much from scratch.

a good workaround to erase all the momory on the ESX is to make a blank bank on the ESX editor, then load it when you want to start from zero
I got it on my smartmedia for easy fresh starts

I really like to have some editor for the MX taht could be the same and maybe some pattern organization in the PC

I am slowing working towards a 100% original set but for now,
and I am only guessing I'd say...
65% of my presets are modifications from the originals,
20% of my presets are completely original
and 15% are unmodified "factory" settings. i.e. too sucky to f*ck with. I'll probably erase them at some point.

For what's worth, I do enjoy playing lead over the top of my EMX with the sounds from my Korg Triton Le.

I hope to own a Radias by X-mas!

I also have Ableton Live but haven't found a way to use them together (EMX & Ableton)

I've replaced some samples with my own, but far from all of 'em. I think I still have all the drum samples on it, 'cause - as supermel74 said - some of the drum sounds are really well produced.

All the patterns I use are original. I've never used one preset pattern in a song.

I've been in a down period now, and haven't touched my ESX-1 for a while, 'til last week. So I haven't done that much with it yet, but I'm gonna install that sample organizer and get me some nice waves and samples.
