Manual says
"A RADIAS program consists of up to four timbres, and you can specify the MIDI channel individually
for each timbre. If you’re playing the RADIAS from an external MIDI device, only the timbre(
s) set to the same channel as the global channel will produce sound."
Is this not kind of limiting? it sounds like I cannot play each timber individually from my externaly connected keyboard, one timber per MIDI channel. I can only play play one timbre if the timbre's MIDI channel matches the Global MIDI channel.

That passage from the manual is very misleading. It's referring only to use of the Global MIDI channel.
Each Radias timbre is assigned a MIDI channel. In the factory presets all timbres respond to the Global channel. However, you can set each timbre to respond to any of the 16 channels you like, for using the Radias in a multitimbral manner. This must be set for each program individually.
The channels are set on editing page P03-4: MIDI. The choices for Ch (channel) are 01-16 or GLB (global). See page 78-79 of the manual.
