Total Effects - Do I need outboard gear or...?

Post by decreebass »

So I have about 30 patches; everything from basic piano to crazy combis that use 14 channels (I play in a Taylor Swift tribute).

I have an issue with getting all my presets (and parts within) to the same/nominal level. They're close, and I tell the soundman that a comp/limiter would be ideal for my board, but they never listen and my volume is all over the place when I'm performing, both in monitors and for the audience. It's super frustrating.

Does the Kronos have an Effects engine that operates globally (ie, so I don't have set MFX or TFX in each preset)?

If not, and if I used the same exact TFX preset/setting on each preset that's in my setlist, that would effectively be doing the same thing, right, assuming the settings in my Setlist have all the presets set to 127 volume, correct?

I'm just trying to avoid having to use outboard gear to level/limit my volume - like a rack compressor or Lne 6 Helix - so that when I go to a gig, the soundman doesn't turn me way down because there's too much low end (and then you can't hear anything else I'm doing). I'd just like my board to sound loud, full, and be able to hear everything without the low synth stuff scaring the soundman for his subs lol.

I think I'd just like to put a multiband comp and a limiter as my TFX, if this is the ideal route.

I don't have an answer but your situation is real! I played at church for years. More recently I learned that the soundman would turn my volume down so that the loudest sound would mix right, meaning any subtle things went unheard. I tend to use a volume pedal to fade strings and pads in and out under the piano for example. In my ears, I'm controlling my sound to the overall mix. Apparently, I should just play wide open all the time!?!

The soundman once commented "I'm not going to ride the fader for your keyboards"...wow, I thought that was his job?

Anyway, it gets real frustrating knowing your working your a** off and it may not even get to the audience!

I think compressors could work but will kill any dynamics. But that seems to be want the sound people want. I considered getting a pair of large VU meters so I could visually monitor my output levels. Maybe use that to do my own compression or at least learn from what I see to modify how I use dynamics.

Good luck! I feel ya...

Adjust volume in Set List Mode.

Create your programs and combis so they sound the best to your ears on their own. Then once all ready, add them as slots to a new Set List. Then adjust the volume of each slot (individual prog/combi) of your set list as you wish. For example, you could want to keep the softest ones at the 127 default volume and adjust the loudest ones to smaller values, it depends what you want to achieve in the (band) mix. Note that set list slot volume is "inserted" just after total effects (see page 681 - parameter guide). Some combis might need adjustments depending how complex your stuff is.
