Hello All,

Apologies for the silly question which feels like I should know the answer too, but is there a way to change a sound of a track or mute it completely in just one variation instead of it changing it for all? For example I want to mute a sound in variation 1 of a style but then have it playing in the rest of the variations.

I would suggest to edit such style by removing all notes from track/variation you want to and save under new name.

Hello, thank you for your reply. I gave it a go but couldn't work it out, it still mutes the track on all 4 variations. I am not sure which of the menu options I should take but I chose the first one Mixer/Fx and just muted it. That didn't work so I then tried to just record over the track with the track set to 0 volume and saved it, played it back and it did it again on all 4 variations. I will keep experimenting I guess.

Without knowing the Pa5x, the information given here regarding MUTING and DIFFERENT VOLUME LEVELS of the SAME TRACKS OF THE VARIATIONS (ELEMENTS) is definitely not correct.

Different sound programs (PCG) can be assigned to the style elements - that can be done with the style-editor.

However, the style player of all previous Pa models is not able to edit a style whose tracks of the four variations allow different mute or volume settings.

It is only possible to use velocity and expression for volume control with different variations / elements.

To mute the sounds of tracks of certain variations, there is a simple trick - you create a "silent" sound program in the sound editor and use this sound for the tracks of a variation that you want to mute.

Different sound for variations / style elements can be selected using the style editor.

So only tracks of variations (style elements) will be heared that are using "audible" sounds in its tracks. That is useful with style tracks you want to use sometimes with that style and the programmed sequences with audible sounds.

Deleting would be easiest I think.

Just in case you’re not into style editing.


Pick style, press record/edit button.
Choose” style edit”.

Top left of screen , scroll thru to the variation you want to delete track from
( you may also need to delete it from the matching fill)
Tap on the track you want to delete.

R/H side mid screen “ delete current chord variation”

Pop up press yes.

Now go back up to L/h top of screen

Chord var cv1 scroll thru if it’s in capital letters CV2 you need to go back down and delete the track from CV2.
If it’s in small letters cv2, then there should be nothing recorded,( I usually check , just in case).
When you’re finished deleting the track, top right, there’s a drop down menu “ save style”
Tap on it, you can rename it. And pick a user spot to save it too.
Either User or Drives if you want to save to usb.

Danny asked for a method to mute and not to delete a variation track.
Therefore since you can't mute an element track only in Style Play so the equivalent mute method in Style edit
is not deleting specific track's event's in all CVs but to mute specific track in Var and this can be done in
Style Edit > Menu > Element Track Controls > Expression page pressing variation button and setting
specific var track expression value to zero "0" (user manual page 814).

This way he will preserve track midi events in case of future use but this will reduce main polyphony since events
will be active but muted.

And that's why it's better to make a copy of the style and delete it. Just keep the original for future reference.

Hi, I always delete my tracks. Personally I don’t see much point in keeping an unwanted track . Both options require the style to be edited and saved as a user style. If the track is ever required in the future, it’s still there in the original style.

I’ve never overwritten factory styles in my earlier korgs, I would have never deleted a track ( don’t know if that was even an option) I’ve always done editing in a user style.

PA5x makes it so much easier to have a heap of user styles.

Anyway that’s just me, superfluous stuff gets dumped. Haha

An advanced user/style creator , creates a style from scratch with entirely custom sound resources.

I also use this path with very complex programming with program changes to console like panning , filtering and sending CC to DAW
or other sound modules , so if I decide to mute a specific track of a specific element Var/Fill , I never delete events or duplicate
Style , I just use zero expression , I try remix again and the sonic result of this element many times and at the end I either recall
expression back to original value nor delete finally events if I'm 100 % sure that finally this track is not necessary for this use ...

It's a matter of Styles production workflow and time saving , and not a hobby for me.

I may have been at a slight advantage, I’ve known Danny for many years thru forums, and I was reasonably sure Danny was referring to either a factory or a former Korg keyboard style.
We are both capable of editing, but I don’t think either of us record from scratch , me , definitely not.
I figured might just be easier for him to delete.

No doubt as professional style creator, you have a totally different needs and have to do things differently. I can spend all day editing a style and still maybe not be satisfied. Start over next day. As a hobbyist , ( and I’m retired) I have time.
If you did that , you’d go broke. So , different workflow needed.

Thank you all so much for your replies i really appreciate it, yes this worked a treat, it muted the track at least which was my goal, but what about if I wanted change the sound of that track for just that variation which was my other query although I won't need it for the style I've been modifying now but may be useful in future when I will need to.

Hopefully Korg would read this and update the OS to include an option on screen so that you can select to swap from "all tracks" or "single track" when modifying a style. This is a function that Ketron have in their mixer and it's so useful for easier editing.

Also as Rikki mentioned, I've known her for many years and I am very much similar to her in terms of being a hobbyist, I don't usually record anything from scratch and I am more about editing the styles to suite the songs I want to play rather than creating songs from scratch.

Antonys production workflow really is a good method for style producers but just as suitable for hobbyists.

A style to be edited with Pa5x requires a user style, but there is a simple method, how to mute tracks of a style without creation of user styles and
without to edit or to save a separete style or to delete tracks.
It is necessary to once create a universally usable sound (noLevel) and a songbook entry for a style in which certain tracks of its elements you wish to be be muted.

First step:
Edit a sound (- no sound -) and display the level of its single OSC multisamples at minimum (-inf). Save this sound - maybe named "noSound" or "noLevel" ...

Second step:
Choose a factory style and save it within a Songbook Entry.
You can choose different Sounds and Effects for the Style tracks, so use settings of that Songbook Entry to change sounds of style tracks in variations you want to mute with the new sound "noLevel" and choose the "Save Book Entry" command from the page menu to save the settings into a SongBook Entry.

Done - the tracks of that style in Songbook are muted as you wished.

The advantage of this is that the style does not have to be edited or saved as a user style. Simply a different style setting (sound of tracks) of an original style is saved in a Songbook Entry. With them you get a different version of an Original Style with muted tracks without having to duplicate it.

If the track is ever required with its Original sounds use the Original style.

If you do not like to create a Sb-Entry for that different Style Settings an user style is necessary, to do the same with it as above with Songbook-Entry.
Use mixer settings of that user style to change sounds of style tracks in variations you want to mute with the sound "noLevel" and choose the "Save Style" command from the page menu, to save the settings into the current Style (because only User Styles can be overwritten with Pa5x).

In earlier Korgs the same could have be done with Sb-Entries and also with User-Styles. The additional benefit of that - like Pa1000 - was the ability to use an individual, additional sound for each track of each variation/element in Style Tracks View.

If "Original Sound Set" checkbox is not selected, that will will make the Style choose the individual sounds assigned to the Style Settings,
instead of the Sounds assigned to the Style Elements (the ‘Original’ Sounds). These individual sounds will become part of the Style Settings.

Once a sound is selected for a specific track, that assigned sound will remain the same for the specific track of each style element of the style and will be memorize after "Write the Style Settings".

To change between Original Sounds and Individual Sounds the checkbox "Original Sound Set" in Style Tracks View is to select/deselect.
Unfortunately, this is another feature that the style player lost with the Pa5x!
