Live Performing with the iM1 on the iPad - Best Practices...

Post by ben1000 »

Howdy...

I am considering using the iM1 on iPad as one of my synths as I play live in the band I'm currently in... This would be as my 2nd keyboard.. My first is a Juno DS.

I have a Novation Impulse 49 as a controller, and a FocusRite iTrack Dock to house the iPad... That let's me attach the Novation via USB, and then charge and get a balanced stereo 1/4 TRS output from the iPad... So far, stability has been good...

Where I'm a little stuck is on saving presets on the iM1... I was initially thinking I'd store programs on a LIBRARY card, in the order I need them so I can access them quickly... However I am worried that there's no easy way to backup this data, and if something happens to the iPad, I wouldn't have easy access to a backup...

So, I'm thinking it's better to write to a USER card, and then save the session... Then I can backup the Session on my Mac, and if something happens to my iPad, I can get another or borrow one and just load the Session data from my Mac...

It's my understanding I would need to use the USER cards for this, not LIBRARY... as USER card are saved with SESSION data, whereas LIBRARY cards are not... Is this correct, or am I making a mistake here?

Finally... I plan to use the iM1 in MULTI mode, with 1 Timbre as my main keyboard sound, and another Timbre playing some drum sounds from the touch pads on my Novation... This seems to work well... But again, there's no way to save the MULTI data to any card... LIBRARY or USER... they only store programs and combis....

However, I believe that when you write a SESSION... the MULTI setup is also saved along with the session data... actually, that's the ONLY place you store a MULTI setup, and just 1 per session... Do I have that correct?

So, again, saving the session would offer me a backup for my programs (stored on USER cards) AND a backup of my MULTI setup... It seems to be the way to go..

That's as far as I've been able to figure it out. I'd love to hear from others as to whether I'm doing the best thing here, or if there's a better way..

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best,

Ben
