True, but without the RADIAS card the M3 only has the EDS engine so bank type wouldn't be relavant. I don't think anyone would want the Kronos to only have HD1 out of the box.

Hence how unfortunate of a choice it was for Korg to release Kronos with only one open user bank

All banks on KRONOS are 'user banks'. If KORG prefilled them with sounds, no complaints from me...

Shakil, it is great that they filled them with sounds.

The only problem is keeping track of combis while changing the program patches. To keep this going without touching factory combis you would need TWO completely free user banks (one EXi, one HD-1).

So the problem is not missing space. There are LOTS of "museum patches" I will never use in the first HD-1 banks. But I before replacing them I have to keep track of the factory combis I want to use.

Jim,

Isn't this the same for most keyboards? The Yamaha Motif performances reference programs as well. I think if I change a program, the performances are affected.

We're moving in circles

1. Many keyboards have fixed ROM sounds, and their factory programs and combis are based on them. The downside is that you sometimes have limited user slots, and that you always have to browse through all factory ROM patches as well as your own, even if you dislike some or many or most of the factory patches.

2. Korg has a much better solution: ROM is on disk, and you can overwrite each bank, factory or user. This is much more flexible.

3. But even this has a downside soon as the factory patches (which are welcome in big numbers!) leave only one FREE user bank. Soon as you change this and use the at least two free banks you need for your own organising, you are in danger mess up factory combi structures.

Result: the Korg comcept is the best. It would just require at least two free banks right from the start to avoid problem three and still keep the flexibility of the Korg concept. Simple as that.
So Korg should do one of two things:
- either add some more banks
- or clean their fatory set from many redundnt or low quality "museum patches" (often based on outdated samples like in other manufactzurer's banks). Then they could easily leave two banks and more for user patches right from the start.

Of course, one man's "museum patch" is another man's favorite patch.

No matter what, a user will have to do some culling of patches to their own taste. I never use factory Combis, so this process is very easy for me. Tweak the programs to my liking or remove them and create my own. Then build my own Combis as I need them.

My guess is a lot of this argument will be moot once the Korg software becomes available.

Regards,

MM

Yes, this occurs, but from my view this only counts for a very small number of patches. I am sure we could get high consensus about many patches which are simply redundant or obsolete in a 2011 workstation: just not up to actual quality standards and hardly useable for most purposes.

The present state of things is bad due to missing courage: outdated patches in masses remain just for the reason that ANY lost sould anywhere in the world might use them, how improbable that ever may be.

Unless KORG releases focused or genre specific Preload data, we are going to have sounds from all genres and eras of music in the preload....

It is up to the user to customize the collection of sounds on KRONOS. And it's only the KORG workstations that let you do that, on other workstation you would have to live with the presets for rest of your life.....

Yes, it is a lot of work. I am sure it will be better situation once the editor and librarian software is released.

The filing structure is very flexible... you can have specific PCG, Songs, and Sampling data..... If you have used up all 200 songs on the SEQ file, you don't have to start a new PCG... The PCG and SEQ can be independent files.

Why should KORG do that?

If they gave blank banks.... we would be saying what a waste of ROM to leave them blank.

There are 14 user banks... we are free to overwrite them. Or at least think of the UA-UG banks user banks. Think of them as blank... and store your sounds there.

Your opinion is one thing but the facts are another, YOU ARE DEAD WRONG!!!
We paid 3000$...for what??? No Factory Sounds? Or no User Banks?
However you wanna turned those 2 terms...
Shakil wrote:Why should KORG do that?
Cuz me and you and everyone else paid 3000$ for it.

You are very funny...THINK of something i paid 3000$ for? You think of it,
i know better then that...if Korg put the letter U or User in there, the concept
is not User...they are not Doubbled as in some Yamaha WSs nor they are
unused in Combinations...wake up. They are not User...you paid for them
to be there...3000$ Factory Content.

A simple question, actually 2:
1. Do you know English?
2. Do you know anything about Synths? Not music.

No, Wrong, it was untill M3 and not with Kronos...i still want Shakil or Dan or
Rich or ANYONE to answer me a simple question:
I want all of the Factory Sounds inside and i wanna create Custom Patches
with HD-1 and EXis...where do i save them??? BOTH...very simple question.
NO WORKAROUNDS!!! I and most of us want the Factory IN!
