Also, the M50 and TR are *scaled down* versions of the M3 and Triton Extreme respectively. You wouldn't expect the low-end netbook you bought today to outperform the gaming-quality desktop you bought a year ago just because it's newer, would you? It's the same deal here.
Keyboard Rig: Korg Kronos, Moog Sub 37, Waldorf Blofeld Module, Neo Instruments Ventilator II, Moog MiniFooger Delay, Strymon BigSky, Roland KC-150, Mackie 802-VLZ4 Mixer
But they have the same engine chip (the M50 and M3 at least), so they sound exactly the same. I don't get why people complains, but I think it doesn't really has to do with the unit.kanthos wrote:Also, the M50 and TR are *scaled down* versions of the M3 and Triton Extreme respectively. If you're unhappy, you probably should have bought another synth that fits more with your personality. That's ok, but don't blame it on the synth.
m50 sounds
I may be your lone sympathizer. I am also more partial to the tr sounds than the m50. But the touch screen is a big plus especially when using it with the user category. I can have 16 commonly used sounds at my fingertips. I use both user category 16 and 17 with my own sound setups. That is a feature that I always wanted and is irreplaceable.
I have tweaked the acoustic piano but still find it doesn't have the quality of the tr. I must admit i wasn't thrilled about the tr piano when i first got it either but was able to tweek the acoustic piano to a great sounding piano. I have also done that somewhat with the m50, just not to the quality of the tr. i really don't have problems with the organ sounds. the tenor sax sound is what i really miss. the m50 doesn't have the mutisample M1 tenor sax that the tr does. the closest multisample is the "saxophone - vibrato". but it still doesn't cut like the M1. I play as part of a duo and use the sax often and find myself really disenchanted by the m50 sax. I think, with time, i can tweak the piano more to my liking but with out the sax multisample i'm afraid i'll never get that great M1/TR sax sound.
Anyone out there know how to convert and load the tr sax sample????

I actually agree with most that the M50 organs actually sound better by themselves, but I don't think they fit into the "Mix' as well as the TR or Triton organs. And I agree with you 1000% about the saxes. I've recorded tenor sax solos with my T3 (same M1 sample as in the TR) that have fooled a lot of people.
I also agree with you that the touch screen interface is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the TR setup; both for programming, and just for getting around the instrument during a performance. I'm currently looking for an expanded Triton or a Triton Extreme for my studio, but for gigs, because of my bad back, I'll stick with my TR61.
Thanx!! JP

Hi
The M50 its more powerfull and the sonic capabilities are way beyond the TR. but the TR is a really good synth, yep is one generation old but this is no reason to say that is a bad synth or has an outdated sound.
If u like the sounds of your TR, u should continue with it, if you prefer the M50 you can always tweak the progs or create new ones.
also, If you like sounds of one old synth that's no reason to say that the new is bad/worst specially if the new one has the same capabilities of the old and more.
about your bad back.. the M50 61 is lighter than the TR61
if the sounds not fit in the mix... the problem is not the board itself... that's a subjective assessment.. and should be solved after tweaking the programs until you find a satisfactory sound.
Regards
Alvaro.

Tweaked and tweaked and downloaded and used it on 8 gigs. Still didn't sound as good to my ears (with the band) as the TR. My ears ARE very used to those Triton sounds. I'm waiting for the M50EX with the added Triton sounds. everyone here says it'll never happen, but...............

I agree completely with johnnypro. I have had the day off today and have been working with both the M50 and TR side by side making sound comparisons, tweaking, eq-ing, everything that I know how to do after working with korg keyboards for over 25 years. In every case of buying a new keyboard i have been able to leave the old one at home and not regret any of the sounds i left behind; without tweaking. I can't say that with the M50. The organs are thin. The pianos are thin. the tenor sax on the m50 doesn't even remotely compare to the what I've always insisted was the closest sounding saxophone in the industry: the M1 tenor sax multisample hich has been included (i think) in all korg keyboards and modules since the M1....until now. its not in the M50!!!! I've tried every sax multisample they've included. they seem to have gone backwards. its the first time i haven't been thrilled about what i thought was to be an upgrade.
Today i've been able to get a pretty good sounding acoustic piano after tweaking for hours and doing comparisons to the TR. The sax, however, is still nowhere close to sounding like a real tenor sax.
I'm also sure that there are more of us out there who have come to expect more from Korg. I've never owned another brand of keyboard. I love the touch view display but i just assumed i would get the same great korg sounds AND MORE plus the display.

Do check out the Foundation Organ in the M50 Download section by Salvador Sevita. It's better than anything I could come up with, especially getting the Leslie sounds to sound fairly right. JP

I'm not familiar with the PA50 Sax but the M50 sax is considerably different from past KORG workstation keyboards such as the M1, TR and everything in between. As far as i can tell they have either done away with or modified the traditional M1 sax multisample.
I use the sax alot and have been very dissappointed by the sax sound in the M50. I've been disappointed by a lot of other sounds as well. I have been able to use another multisample in the M3 than the one KORG used for their tenor sax and get something a little better with a lot of other tweaking but its still not what I've come to know in most KORG boards.
the tenor sax is what I am referring to. the alto sax seems to be ok though, like most other sounds on the M3, I'm just not happy with. I'd like to see a whole new set of multisamples or an upgrade. I have had the M3 since just after Christmas 09 and have stopped using it out on live gigs because the sounds are noticeably different. I would have liked them to be noticeable different and better but they are noticeable different and worse than what I'm accustomed to from KORG.

It's funny because I had my M3 for two years before I finally started using it live. I didn't like the sound either until I started using it on a regular basis. After about a month of gigging with it, figuring out how to change sound without cutoff, I would never go back to my Triton-Pro ever again. I have them side-by-side in my studio, it's your ear that has to get adjusted to the cleaner sound of the M3. Everyone is different, but In my opinion the M3 just completely blows away previous korg product (except Oasys) of course.
Thanks for the input. i hope that works for me too. i'm certainly not biased about it and i can see how learning the product better could certainly help. I didn't said all that i did in my last post to make it seem like i've given up on it. I work with it everyday. i certainly don't want to see the investment wasted. I have worked with the cutoff control (and others) to get a little better sax sound so its funny you should mention that. so i'm greatful for your comments because that sure gives me some hope. I realize that sound is subjective so i try to temper my comments with what i know is a lack of objectivity. its just hard to think about laying down a grand for a board i'm not happy with out of the box. thank you so much.
