I think Korg got on the right architecture path with Oasys PCI and the Oasys keyboard, of course. From there, it was decisions to get the cost down, make improvements and allow it to evolve with its OS. I think we are fortunate to enjoy all the effort and planning by Korg.

As a long term Oasys project follower and still keeping my Z1, Oasys and Kronos (I missed the PCI card) I can see how much they have advanced in these years not only in sounds but also in the underlaying architecture that opened the door to many more possibilities and much better playability. I think those endless possibilities are what still make Oasys and Kornos such amazing keyboards. You can find a way to do what you like most of the time.

But the Z1 with the many limitation it has still amaze me with the sound and as many others who owned this beast at that time still missing some models lost in the process as the brass and wind models... or the human voice model from the PCI card in the Kronos. For sure Kronos covers those sound families very well but knowing whar they did in the past I still have the feeling they could do it even better with the improved expresivity of the models.... who knows.. maybe a hybrid model based on samples like the piano in Kronos to have best of both worlds ☺

Old and senile? I resemble that remark!

Just last night I was in my bands' studio recording keyboard tracks. I only did piano and organ. One sound per song. The organ sound is one that I came up with using the CX-3 engine. I've been tweaking this one for quite a while now but I defy anybody to tell the difference between it and a real B-3.

Yes! I constantly hear people saying how the CX-3 engine is no good etc... and doesn't sound like a B3. Glad to hear that it can.

I'm trying hard to fight off the old and senile by staying young at heart...

Just for the record, there *is* something that is close to the Kronos --

sample playback, sampler, FM engine, physical modeling engine, sequencer, arps, hard disk recording, 8 audio inputs, 4 audio outs, modulation matrix, 4 IFX and 2 MFX and EQ

That was my poor man's Oasys for a few years. But yes, the Kronos is unmatched having not only those features above, but also sample streaming, DX7 patch compatibility, extensive MIDI controller / MIDI master keyboard functionality, USB host... It'll take me another couple years to master Karma and upgrade its libraries, so the Kronos is good for another 5 years at least...

I still have an original demo that consisted of my Yamaha EX-5, Korg Oasys-PCI (for drums) and guitar through a Roland VS2480. I actually was able to run the OasysPCI card(Win 95) and Nuendo 1.0(Win2000)... Thanks to WinME. Still love the drums. Not quite DFH, but the best at the time!

I don't get to spend as much time writing music as I would like to, but I have found that since I've had my Kronos, writing is much more of a pleasure and just fooling around on my Kronos I am still almost 5 years later finding inspiring sounds.

Since I am also much more familiar with it, I am also much more capable of creating new sounds as well. I used to be a bit afraid but not any more! Now I'm fearless when it comes to creating new sounds! I just go for it!

I still haven't got to the bottom of my Kronos... it's programming is deep & wide...

My Korg M1 was completely transparent to me ... I could program that in my sleep ..
My Korg DW8000 was also very straight forward...

but 9 synth engines are way too much for me to conquer...

There's not much to it. I just started with a blank CX slot, called up the first four drawbars full out. Adjust the chorale to setting C-3. Sometimes I dial that one back to C-2. Amp gain about 75%. I'm not at my Kronos right now so I'm trying to remember. I beleive I used the older B-3 setting with lots of leakage. I also use the Leslie sim in the IFX as well as the one in the prog. I have them set exactly the same. There was a thread on the forum a few years ago that listed all the settings. I don't have any key click or anything else on. When I'm playing, I often play with the drawbars the way I would on a real Hammond.
I also have the EQ set fairly bright.
I know I've forgotten a few things but that pretty much the jist of it.

Yes it does. I never really thought about it. I just made it for fun and then it turned out to be my favorite organ sound. I use the expression pedal a lot when I'm playing it live. I try to do everything that a person playing a real Hammond would do. I think this has more to do with the sound than anything, really. You have to remember that since the B-3 was invented, it's probably gone through multiple internal changes as parts became scarce. This is purely my theory by the way but I think it holds. As far as I've been able to find out, no 2 B-3's ever sounded exactly the same and some just sounded better than others.
I think it often came down to the player. Like any other instrument, violin for example, you have to "work" it. Move the draw bars, etc. mid song.
