@Ottawa58, I'll be playing a lot of piano as well but possibly quite a bit of rock / metal as well (not so much on the thumping club sounds side! :)) With regards to balanced inputs/outputs, can you clarify what the distinction is (just for me own education).

@jazlover / @SDDP, thanks I'll take a look at the KRK's in a bit more detail.
That's probably the least optimal listening position - in a rectangular room along the short axis. I would expect you to have lots of trouble getting an even low end - frequency bumps and dips around 100Hz and below at least. Definitely invest in room treatment (bass traps, different listening position/setup) before spending serious money on a sub.

I have a set of KRK Rokit 8's which work just fine. Only time I have an issue is when I play Rhodes type pianos with too much volume.
They can distort a bit.
All in all I've been happy with them for about 5 years now.

Because it also has DEEP button, I can use one K10 as a portable bass amp. Its small enough that it fits in the wheel well of my car. There's also a Vocal Boost button when you're using the K10s as PA tops (1000w Class D amps with 129 dB SPL).
I also rate the K10's, although my preference is the Yamaha DXR10, which I use for live monitoring. The only thing I would say about these type of speakers, is they have fans, which if you're listening at very low volumes may not be as suitable for home monitoring.

In my home studio, I actually use a pair of Alesis M1 520's. They are really good for the money, although again, they are just a little noisy.
