I generally look at an analog mono synth as a starting point, not just a dry standalone voice although that also has its place.

I run my Sub Phatty through an M3 usually adding a bit of delay. Sometimes a lot of delay and reverb can mangle the sound very nicely too. It's just nice having a wide variety of different effects available to play around with.
