Derek never smiles while he's playing. If I was playing with the guys in BCC, I'd be grinning from ear to ear.

I am used to seeing the Yamaha Motif logo in the band playing on American Idol, but I took a glance the other night and I noticed a Korg logo on the keys.

My guess is it was a Kronos? Maybe someone else knows to confirm?

That is a pretty high-profile gig, and says a lot about the sound quality of the keyboard.

Interesting! I've seen them use a Roland Stage Piano for rehearsals (RD-700 something), but only catch bits of episodes here or there. I'll have to have it on just to see what Korg board they're using. I know the MO has been the performance board for quite some time.
Yamaha S80, Kronos 61.

I saw that too, but I think it was a Triton.

A couple of years ago, they seemed to use Motifs exclusively for the gigging band--you'd see Rolands in rehearsal. Last season, with a new band, I saw all Rolands.

I used to think it had to do with some sort of endorsement, but now I suppose it's just the preference of the individual players.

I would imagine that if you are playing in the American Idol house band you get paid enough to use whatever you want.
If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!
Gear: Kronos 73, Wavestation EX, Polysix, King Korg, Monotron and Monotron Duo, Minikorg, Moog Grandmother, my very old MiniKorg, 4 acoustic and 9 electric guitars, 1 Ibanez 5 string bass, a Steel guitar, a bunch of microphones, 2 pairs of studio monitors and other very cool toys, 1 wife and 4 cats and a lava lamp!

I guess, however I sometimes see commercial bands having quite old gear. Probably the reason is just money. Most of the audience doesn't hear the difference anyway and costs still are costs.

A lot of the real synth enthousiast are not professional people and buy it because a lot of different reasons .. one of them just to have such cool synth.

That last picture there - is that lighting playing me a trick, or is that plastic side totally smashed?

While I am a professional person, (I do have a paying job, just not in the music industry, not that I have not been pay for music, it just a negative balance when compared to the assets, music equipment, I buy).

I do agree, you can't run a business buying the lastest and greatest all the time.

Sometimes, the band just wants the same old sounds year on year.
I advertised My 01Wfd in 2000, when i replaced it with the Triton. It was bought by Iron Maiden - who use one for certain songs (offstage). The old one had taken a pyrotechnic hit!

Yes that's cool too ... and also there are people from non famous bands who like to have the same gear as their favorite band keyboardist has/had.

Until the Kronos I mostly could pay my new instruments with income from the band (which is not high but I don't buy a new instrument often), however for the Kronos it was only about 50%, ... and about 53% if you add the donation counts for my app ... but I have another rule when I buy something:

if I use it for 1 hour a day for 3 years, it's 1000 hours then the Kronos costed $3 per hour ... that's much less then going to a bar or cinema for an hour.

Heh. Heh. Use it long enough, and it will be practically free!
