Another wierd area is when you have generated synthezis combined with small samples.

What do I mean? I mean for instance the cx3. The sound is generated by a synth engine but some key elements like key click and other stuff is sample based.

It gets even wierder when you think about even 'analog' synths in the digital world since the ocsillators are sample based using lookup tables or wave tables to create the sound.

This would potentially mean that no sound that is using a computer (in any form!) for sound generation is free to sample becauce it's almost certanly based on stored data used to create its unique sound :shock: :evil:

I wouldn't be surprise if such a thing as sampling a piano was considered "fair use" by the international conventions.

Or perhaps there's no restriction because the instrument has been made for over 50 years. The usual max amount of time for which a copyright is valid.
