Physical Size

Post by niddnet »

Hi guys

Not sure if I should post this here or Kronos...

Looking at the physical size of the Pa4X vs the Kronos 2, are they physically any different, in terms of dimensions?

I've been offered the chance to exchange my Kronos for a Pa4X - but I've already ordered the flight-case for the Kronos2.

My understanding of 'Arranger' and 'Workstation' was was a little out - and 'Karma' - whilst great - doesn't quite do what I want in terms of styles and stuff.

I know both keyboards are great, but in different ways and directions, and there's plenty of A/B comparisons around - but I just want to know about the size...

Hope someone can help...

Mods - feel free to move this to Kronos if you prefer, as that's what I officially 'have' at the moment!

PA4X (without music stand, display fully lowered)
76 key: 1,192 x 364.4 x 125.56 mm / 46.93” x 14.35” x 4.94”
61 key: 980 x 364.4 x 125.56 mm / 38.58” x 14.35” x 4.94”

Kronos 2
61 key: 1,040 x 364 x 134 mm / 40.94” x 14.33” x 5.28”
73 key: 1,221 x 371 x 148 mm / 48.07” x 14.61” x 5.83”
88 key: 1,443 x 371 x 148 mm / 56.42” x 14.61” x 5.83”

Cheers

Hi Pete

That's what I found too.

I guess, my question is more about the physical SHAPE than the size...

I see the PA4X is 0.4mm deeper than the Kronos 2 - which would easily be taken up by the squishy foam in the Kronos 2 case... and it's 60mm shorter than the Kronos - so it would fit, in theory, in the case with a little bit to spare.

Questions, quesitons. I guess I have to decide if I keep the Kronos (which is better suited to my band) or move to the PA4X, which will do for the band, but also suit better for our duo.

Choices, questions. Sometimes I dislike being so indecisive.

I don't mean to overstate the obvious, but please, don't buy a keyboard to fit the case! That's backwards thinking, in my book. Get the tool you want/need, and then get the right case to protect it.

Hi Dave,

You're exactly right.

The reason I'm asking is (thankfully) now moot - but here WAS the situation.

I decided to sell of my Yammy Tyros to buy a Kronos. Which I did - got the K2 61 key as a 'direct replacement' to the Tyros, thinking that it's unrivalled in its live capability, etc, and would really give my playing the 'edge' in the band.

I also play in a duo.

So - a big change with the Kronos from a Tyros, I decided to order a custom case for the Kronos (as you do when spending £££££.

Then I realised that I'd not taken a warranty on it, and because I've had it longer than 7 days, I couldn't retro-add the warranty through my supplier. However, they said I *COULD* return it for full credit - re-order, and THEN get the warranty.

So, looking on their site, they had no Kronos in stock - but they DID have a PA4X - which I can get for very little more money. And it's far closer to the keyboard I'm "used to".

Which left me with a custom case for a Kronos 2. So my question was, 'will it fit' and 'how bad will it be'.

As it happens, just now we've gone full circle, and the case manufacturer has emailed me, saying they've not yet started manufacture, as they'd had a supply delay. I jumped on the opportunity, and asked him to hold on making a Kronos case, and instead make a PA4X case.

So there's the full story of Kronos to PA4X - and still ending up with the right case to fit the machine.

Feel a little like I'm betraying the Kronos, but, my fault for confusing 'Arranger' and 'Workstation' in Korg nomenclature, and also 'KARMA' and 'Backing Styles'!!

You live and learn - and thankfully, I've done so in a not-so-costly way!

Understood, Niddnet!
Don't worry - you're gonna LOVE the 4x. It as complete as I can imagine you'll need, and sleek, and sexy, to boot!

Hi niddnet
Many times the Kronos and its amazing KARMA can be mistaken for an arranger type of keyboard.
Kronos is so NOT an arranger in any way but rather the best and most outstanding workstation there is.
In terms of performing, sequencing, quality of styles and sounds, and authentic controllable behaviour modeling of sounds, the PA4x far far exceeds the Tyros IMHO.
As Dave says you will love the pa4x but be patient as there is a learning curve coming from Tyros

All the best

Just to thank you all again for your help and sound advice.

I spoke to my supplier who took back my Kronos for full credit, which I then used to pay for the Pa4X.

In the week I've had it, it has not ceased to amaze me, make me smile, and - wow... I'm somewhat impressed!

That's NOT to say that the Kronos is not good - had I been in a different group, the Kronos would have been the way forward for sure. But now there's a duo, as well as sitting at home, the Pa4X is the one for me.

Already got my Alesis V61 connected (direct USB connection) and assigned to 3rd voice, as I rarely need to layer more than 2 sounds...

Next on the list, I think, will be figuring out the set lists etc. I think I'll need two very different setups - first, playing in a 'full' band, where I'll need the full keyboard, no split, no backing etc... and then second, for the duo - where I'll be using all the 'performance' features - styles, backinig tracks etc.

I can't wait.

(and to finish off THIS thread - a custom Pa4X flight case is on its way to completion from Castle Cases - highly recommend them)

I suspect I may be back again soon, asking more questions!!

I agree with Pete. I have an Oasys 76 which is awesome, but as fun as Karma is, it is not an arranger. In doing a solo gig Karma can work, but with a band it is much harder to pull off; not impossible, but hard. Stephen Kay makes it look easy because he really understands it and is an amazing musician. For us normal folks, an arranger is much easier and more predictable.

You'll enjoy the Pa4x. Just a warning, when the Pa4x is plugged in it is in standby mode (which means some components have power to them). Read the manual very carefully before installing the micro SD or you will regret it. Enough said.

That sounds ominous! Thank you for the warning!

I have read a few places that people have SD sockets which don't work... I presume this is what you're talking about?

These are the kinds of warnings I'm interested in... kind of a "50 things you MUST know that they didn't make clear".

My thought is that I'll stick a 32GB or 64GB SD in - that's bigger than I'll need, for a few extra styles and a few MP3 backing tracks...

I may add an SSD in future - but SD will do the trick for now, with external USB sticks etc. if needed.

I'm guessing you have the 61 key version. I didn't find there were any restrictions on size when I was able to see mine. Just remember 32 GB is a lot of memory for a keyboard. My experience is unless you have huge samples (which take a lot of time to load) you will never fill it up. The normal file sizes are not that big. You don't NEED the microSD. USB chips are huge, convenient, and safer.
