Never been any reason Head East

Post by jmchiro »

My band wants to cover this song.

I hear three different keyboard parts: Organ, MiniMoog with short portamento and filter sweep, MiniMoog with long portomento and a very pronounced LFO/vibrato at the end of the synth solo.

I know you guys have played this tune: have you approached this as a split, or as three separate programs. I only see that portamento can be switched on/off, but not really controlling the portamento rate in a specific program or combi.

What has worked for you?

Thanks in advance !!

First, the portamento is rate-based, so you only need one Moog sound for the lead, because the glide time is longer between distant octaves. I use a split of the same sound for the third interval harmony before the riff kicks in, because they must have independent portamento. After the intro, I switch to a full keyboard version of the lead sound so I can get the multi-octave portamento in the rest of the song. I set the resonant sweep that occurs before the 2nd verse as the filter envelope so I can just hold the key down. The organ is on another keyboard. I read that the 2nd Moog is overdubbed so I just try to appoximate the significant parts of the leads.

My old band:

I have the organ then 2 different zones of the same patch (so I can do the harmonized parts at the beginning). I just use a fixed portamento and some filter sweep.

(Note: top keyboard - local kronos - is all minimoog. Bottom keyboard is a controller controlling the Kronos. Most is organ, but I have a top zone split to the same sound as the top keyboard for the harmonized part)
