Not sure where you are looking but those are pretty serious chunks of metal you are looking at.
It is certainly heavy enough and stable, I modified mine to take a double tier on top of the existing one.
I actually have the old model which I got free so the price isn't a worry :D

Wish I got your pricing on it. Yeah, not sure how you're getting that impression from the photo. It's a beefier frame than the one on my Chevy truck. Yes, it's expensive. I don't plan on ever buying another stand though and I've had many. I have back issues and it's really helping me rather than spending up to 6 hours in the saddle plus a few in the car.

Solid Stand

Post by Ottawa58 »

As always, I stand to be corrected if proven wrong. It's just that I have done quite a bit if research looking for a super stable stand. There's nothing in my city to try except mostly X type frames, and the occasional Z. Therefore it ends up being research.

In watching the youtube ads, I notice that manufacturers show the features of their products, but it is rare they ever show a person actually rigorously playing on it. (To demonstrate horizontal sway and vertical bounce).

Is there a youtube of the solid stand taking a pounding? I have the Hercules Z, and of course it claims to be rock solid. It is not --- by virtue of one post per side there is still quite a bit of horizontal sway, but not the bounce of an X frame. It is 'good enough' but not 'rock solid'.

I use a Standtastic 3-tier and wouldn't use anything else. Super easy setup/teardown and super stable.

I used to play an 88 key Triton Pro X and I used an X stand but I was always worried about playing too aggressively on either end of the keyboard but with the 73 key kronos I don't worry at all. I prefer the smaller footprint of the x stand as opposed to the A frame style. I've also found the A frames tend to bounce more.

Just my two cents worth here but I think they are valid points.

I'm finding that this stand works well with some minor modifications. http://www.quiklok.com/catalog/?p=produ ... ame=QL-742

I took off the bulky plastic cover on the lock mechanism so I could drill a hole on the left side of the locking disc, which I then put a lock pin after it's set up to avoid any potential for the tiny built in lock to fail. I got mine from Home Depot

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-8 ... /204225884

I currently have a Casio Privia 150 on the bottom tier and a Kronos 61 on the top tier. It's the bulkiest and most user friendly X stand that I've been able to find and seems to be doing quite well. I did have the lock mechanism fail on me during setup early on and had to use a strap, but since then, I've gone with the backup pin, which should be the case for any X stand to eliminate the single point of failure.

I've also replaced the center screw with a heavier gauge one that is also solid for most of the length of the screw and just has threads on the end. Again at Home Depot. With the default hardware, opening and closing the stand usually wears down the threads in the middle and weakens the screw over time. Never had one snap, but didn't like the look of my old one when I took it apart.

I plan on doing some more beefing up, but it's a good stand out of the box, I just like to make things a bit more failsafe and reliable.

For heavy 88 keys, I think if you were to rate stand stability by type, it would go something like this (from least stable/bouncy to most stable/no movement)

X stand

X stand w/ bracing

V stand (2 radial "legs")

Ultimate type (single center, 3 radial "legs")

spider type (single center with 3-legged base)

A frame (4-footed cross brace but light material)

Z stand

4 footed cross-braced (Standtastic)

4-legged table top type (DJ/mixer stand)

actual 4 legged table top/desktop

I think the issue is stability at standing up playing height. No X stand has that. The Ultimqte and Spider are reasonable but get quite high. I'm 2 meters (6'6"/7") and have my Ultimate almost at the top with my 88 key Kronos. When I have a sitting down gig I use a K&M 18950. It's the most stable thing I've ever had for live stuff, it really doesn't jiggle or move at all, but there is no way I could get it up to comfortable standing up playing height. Some suggestions here seem to forget that part. Using the second tier would help but would also seriously impair the stability.

Word of mouth is better than a video - I used it for a dozen gigs with two extra layers on top - rock steady :verycool:

Gibraltar drumstands also has parts for keyboard stands.. You order the parts and build your own custom stand..

It costs some coins, but i dont think anyone can beat the configuration options

SanderXpander I am almost 12" shorter, 5'8 on a good day so I am lucky in this case by standing and playing has a fairly low center of gravity! I guess on occasions short works! :3drofl:

Gibraltar

Post by Ottawa58 »

The Gibraltar modular system looks good - it would just take some careful planning to make sure you got the right parts for a keyboard, or even workstation set-up. I would class it as semi-permanent; it could be broken down, but not in a few seconds. I'm guessing something really good would be less than $500

I envy those folks that have the skills to just fire up the table saw and custom make something that looks great. I'd cut my finger off - completely missing the point :)

Try just googling custom keyboard stands. I did and found some very interesting ideas. For me though the 2 biggest concerns are stability and room for my pedal board. Pretty much all modern keyboard stands assemble and disassemble quickly these days.
