Serious problem on TEX 61..need urgent help

Post by Guzicar »

Hello everyone, I have a big problem with my extreme. I am not to sure if it's a physical hardware problem or just software. I thought it was the ram maybe but I purchased brand new ram from ebay and replaced it this week and still have same problem...

What happens is at any random point while I'm playing the sound freezes. It sounds like someone is just holding down the last note I just played, until i change menus/combi/program or anything do anything that will change the screen or sound. Then the keyboard continues to work normally. It happens on any sound by the looks of it, sampled, combi, program and moss sounds. Someone told me they had similar problem and just loaded the global file from another set. I tried this but then i lost my user scales.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be?? or how to atleast transfer my userscale to the new global ? I have 10 weddings booked over the next couple of months and need to fix this problem asap. I can't afford to have this problem occur in the middle of a gig while im playing. it will be very loud and ugly, wreck the gig completely.

Do you have a damper pedal plugged into it??

"sound freezes"

Is this a continuous sustain of a single note or chord, or is it as if the damper pedal were held down?

The first could be an indication that note off was not being sent to the synth engine and might be a keyboard problem - the quick and dirty solution/troubleshoot is to try to isolate where the problem is happening. One way to do this is by plugging in another keyboard via midi and see if the problem persists; if not then the issue is most likely in the physical keyboard itself - maybe a loose part blocking some portion of the keystroke of recovery and keeping that note from shutting off.

If what you're hearing mimics the sustain pedal being held down, then I'd look for a short in that board (you said nothing was plugged in there).

I would be surprised (hey, it happens) if the global data load-up were actually responsible for the glitch - the only thing that references this sort of problem is the open/closed sustain switch preference under controllers and that you should be able to do without reloading ALL the global data.

You can reload your user scales by opening the .pcg file that has 'em and exploring down into the 'GLOBAL' folder - alt (user) scales should be in their own folder (as are kits and arps), then its simply a matter of loading them just as you would a program or combi patch.

Most likely the damper pedal input has a bad solder contact. It's a very common problem on the extreme. Resoldering is easy if you're careful and have a little experience. Try using angled jack plugs on your pedals in the future to relieve stress on the sockets.

Thank you guys I will try some of this stuff in the next day or two and let you all know how I went. Billbaker, it happens at pretty random points. Not that regular. It can occur once in a day, sometimes none, sometimes several times. It sounds like just a single note is constantly playing but also on some sounds I have which use a user scale sound like it's a whole bunch of notes, like a distorted chord.

Hmmm, I have heard something like what you are experiencing, but not on the Extreme.

On the Classic (probably due to the slower processing speed) if I save while the arpeggiator is running there is often a "hung" note while the combi or program is being saved. Thankfully that goes away as soon as the save process is complete. That would be the only routine circumstance that I can think of that might be contributing to this thing you're experiencing.

Any chance that you're accidentally hitting save, or that the save button might be shorting or over sensitive? (That could be a flex in the board or push of an adjacent button.)

Is the one note "hang" happening while you have the arpeggiator running?

When the hang ups occur, do you feel like it's the use of user scales that are contributing to the glitch? (Fewer occurrences using "normal" scales).

[This last is just pure curiosity] What's the nature of your user scales - middle eastern, micro-tuning, quarter scale, whole-tone? I don't often use user scales myself unless there's a special need like wanting to spread cymbal samples in less-than-half-step intervals.

Sorry for the late reply. I had no success in fixing this issue. It looks like it's just something to do with the set, I loaded another older set of mine that I used to use and that seemed to work fine. But who knows...I ended up buying a Korg M3 out of the frustration...haha
