Should I return M50-88 and wait for Krome-88?

Post by RlaRed »

Hey all,

Yesterday I bought a new M50-88 from Guitar Center. Price was $1600 but they were having a 15% off sale so I got it for $1360, which I think is a fantastic price.

Then I came home and saw the announced the Krome. Now I'm debating if I should return the M50 and wait for the Krome and buy that one?

From what I can tell, the Krome has a much better screen and interface. And it's newer obviously and probably has a few better sounds. Also, it will be relevant, i.e. the forum activity, updates, new software, etc. Makes it more interesting and exciting for me :)

On the flip side, I feel like I'll have to pay a lot more for the Krome-88, since the M50-88 used to be over $2K when it first came out. Also, I LOVE the GH3 action on the M50-88 and I'm concerned that the Krome will have a crappier keybed since the weight is almost 15 lbs less.

I want to keep this keyboard for a long time, so I feel like it's an important choice. I can return the M50 for up to 30 days.

Anyone have a perspective on this?

Since you bought version with 88 hammer keys, you would greatly benefit from the new huge piano sounds.

I would still return it but I do not believe the M50 will drop much lower anytime soon, it is already selling for well under 1000 for a 61. They are out of production though.

I would return it, your M50 is almost discontinued already.

I didn't know they were out of production (already got one ... but didn't sell because I don't get much for it anyway). And still use it at home.

It all depends on your budget and needs.
Can you hear the difference between the 2 workstations sounds?
Do you need all the extra features? The screen has the same touchsurface, so you have to push real hard (saw that in a demo video).

I guess you did some research before you bought the M50-88 so your choice was already a good one.

.
Do not believe your eyes then. I own the M50 myself and the screen does not require you to push hard at all, in fact it is a fairly light touch. If the screen was not properly calibrated it would be harder to select however you can recalibrate the screen and bring the screen back to light touch as mine is and has never required recalibration in fact.
WARNING////// If your touch screen requires you to push hard to select, you need to recalibrate the screen in global mode. I would not suggest you use your screen out of calibration like the video as repeated hard touchs could result in a broken screen. When properly calibrated a light touch is only required..

Well, if you are used to a capacitive screen like one on a Samsung Galaxy S2, the screen on an M50 needs to be pushed somewhat firm. Especially when you want to drag s acrollbar accross the screen.

In a thread in the Krome forum it's mentioned that the Krome might have (basic?) sampling. If this is true (it's unclear from the specs) it's a pretty major functionality difference and that alone would warrant exchanging the boards.

Calibration is your friend I repeat... Do you currently own the M50? Perhaps yours needs repair. The ones that I have tried (only a few) have had excellent touchscreen capabilities.
I should mention here that the G2 has absolutely zero sequencing capability also.

Indeed it does. Here is a link to the other thread on Krome sampling.
