Hello,
I'm aware following setup is not clean, yet I tried it, and as expected, it's not brilliant for most effects because of feedback (and I guess other effects introduce additional deformations of the source sound):
DP-004 replay tracks 1/2 (line out) -> miniKP -> DP-004 inputs A+B -> record into tracks 3/4
I guess in an improved DP-004 there would be a separate FX send/return that could then be mixed in.
So is there a clean way to apply mini-KP effects to tracks without a second recorder (or DAW, which would make the miniKP rather useless - I try to work without PC)?
I first thought of using a mixer, but the fundamental problem remains - how to avoid the feedback loop that appears when the DP signal comes back into the DP.
thx,

OK, to be clear, are you talking about the Tascam DP-04? If not, just ignore the rest of this post.
I have the DP-01FX and I use the effects loop to do the same kind of thing you're talking about. I never have any feedback problems at all.
It doesn't seem like there should be any feedback the way you are set up. Do you volume turned down on tracks 3 + 4?
Also, are you using monitors or headphones?
I also like to record without a PC. Good luck with this.

It's the DP-004 (http://tascam.com/product/dp-004/); I use headphones.
Note that the problem is fundamental - the recorder output is sent to the fx, who transforms it, that comes back in and that signal immediately leaves back the recorder (via the monitor output), to enter the fx again.
AFAIK the DP-*FX models have built-in effects; the 004 doesn't, so I would like to send the output to an external fx processor and record the result.
Maybe this might be possible by somehow removing the wet signal from what the recorder initially outputs.
I'm an audio noob, I suspect that delays will make this impossible to realise (or S should also delay the signal from the recorder line out so that it can correctly filter away that signal from what the fx returns.)
Indeed, recording without PC is not the same

I just took a quick look at the manual for your Tascam and it looks like the only output is the headphone out, which would cause this problem since it is outputting both the pre-recorded tracks plus what you are recording plus the monitor mix.
While I think this could procude some cool experimental feedback loop sounds I can certainly understand how it can mess up what you are trying to do.
Unfortunately, I don't see a solution that doesn't involve getting another recorder or having another person work the KP (or using your feet).
If you are on a budget you could download Audacity for free and record the intial part on your PC. Then you could re-record it through the MiniKP onto the Tascam.
Otherwise, you'll have to record it through the KP on the first pass. My guess is that you are busy playing whatever instrument is running through the KP so you don't have any extra hands available to work the KP.
This is going to sound strange but have you tried using your feet? I saw a guy once who used his foot on the touch screen of his DS-10 while playing guitar with his hands. Put on a clean pair of socks and put the KP on the floor. Sorry, that's the best idea I can come up with...
