Live for Concerts

Post by johnjwong »

How come I never seen any M3s or M50 used for professional live concert players backing celebrities? Usually they use Tritons, Roland RD300GX, Yamaha CP300, MO, etc... I never seen any fantoms or motif used as well... Please note, I focus on asian concerts especially hong kong ones.

M3's and Motif XS's were used pretty heavily in Michael Jackson's "This Is It" rehearsals (as seen on the This Is It DVD).

Saga's Jim Gilmour updated his Tritons and Trinities to M3s, he only kept a Triton Extreme for some "special" sounds, as he said in an interview for the german TV.

This lady uses an M3 in Kylie Minogue's live concerts... http://www.korg.co.uk/artists/SarahDeCourcy.asp

it sounds like you saw shows where the keyboard player was indeed a piano player.

RD300 is FAR better than m3 or motif or triton if what you need is piano sounds and piano feel.

On the pther hand, if you try extracting from an RD a "moog solo emulation" or a "oohhh-ahhhh pad", it is not the best tool, to say the least.,

while the M3 does a good job of producing a fair piano PLUS some moogish sounds PLUS some choirs PLUS some kind of brasses PLUS strings PLUS hammonds etc etc etc.

If those bands needed a piano player (it usually happens when the band can afford real strings, real brasses and winds, a second keyboard player for synths, or has 3 guitar players or a choir - in short, it happens in big productions),

or if the keyboard was just a controller for a rack of synth modules (again, it happens with really money-loaded bands)

choosing an rd and not a m3 makes sense.

the better is the setup, less are the chances that just ONE keyboard serves all purposes.

You'll probably never see a m3 sitting atop a real hammond, faced by a midied yamaha grandpiano, with a rhodes on the other side and a minimoog on top of the rhodes.

THAT kind of keyboard player won't need a workstation.

Or maybe: you'll see a m3 or a motif in such setups, if the keyboard player has all the "real things" in the world, but uses a workstation for samples, sequences, backup, or because he's been programming his pads on Korg for the past 20 years, so he always has a korg handy for personal sound design.

Just my two cents.

On the Jay Leno Show the keyboard player uses the Korg M3. The roots on the late night show uses the Roland Fantom G
