Sound-a-like SKAT Roland sound
Are there any users that can give some guidance on approximating a sound set that is ready to play that gets close to the Roland SKAT setting?
Re: Sound-a-like SKAT Roland sound
Well, having asked the question, I found that it can be done quite nicely by using Take1 or Take2 stock sounds and putting them on the upper keyboard and then the real tweek seems to be to run that voice through Effect 13 which is Talking Modulator and then run the 100 % modulated product back through reverb so that means that Talking modulator has to be on effect D since there is only a D to C routing patch which I set as high as it needed to get a presence. This means that the other two upper voices can be used for two pianos or a piano and an outstanding solo instrument for example. This gets closer to Roland's skat sound and gives the user control over many parameters such as the vowels to impose Ah Eee I, Oh, Uoo limited to 3 alternating ones but this is what gives the variety of vowel sounds that gives something better than just the Take 1 and 2 voices.kgardner wrote:Are there any users that can give some guidance on approximating a sound set that is ready to play that gets close to the Roland SKAT setting?
I would appreciate feedback from anyone who tries it and knows the Roland sound well. Do any of the seasoned veterans here have any suggestions for better choices of settings? I tried this effects setup with all the Vocal Assault sounds from Irish Acts that I have and the two KORG Take 1 and Take 2 seemed best although interesting results were obtained with the 'Staccato' of Vocal Assault in that it prevents sustaining the voice overly and getting an uncharacteristic result. Yes, it seems best when played more toward staccato than legato. Some of the softer voice sounds did give the mellower examples of Manhattan Transfer repertoire.
Setttings I used in the Talking Modulator are:
Sweep Mode: LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator)
Manual Voice Control: "Bottom" full left Src. |Tempo
Voice Top: O
Voice Centre: A
Voice Bottom: U
LFO Frequency: 0.42 ............ Src. TEMPO .......... Amt; +0.00
BPM/MIDI Sync. Off ............ BPM: 120 ........... Base Note: d 1/4 note ...............Times: x1
Formant Shift: 0 ................. Resonance: 50
Wet/Dry: Wet .................. Src. OFF ................. Amt: + 100
In the send to effects, I set the voice's channel to a suitable reverb send and the D effect to Talking Modulation to 127 (full blast) although reducing this does produce interesting variations that some might find to be an improvement.
