External device sync issue

Post by Inksta »

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out here?
Ive been using Cubase LE4 wth my M3, Radias R, Prophet 08 and SH201 going through MIDI interface with no problems.

I decided to disconnect my PC from the loop and connect midi out of the M3 into the Radias thru that and into the Prophet, thru that and into the SH 201 so I could just play around live.

The problem is, when I set the Radias clock to Ext. MIDI and the Prophet clock to MIDI out then set the SH201 clock to receive externally, non of the arps or mod sequencers work on anything other than the M3. As soon as I switch all the clocks back to internal, everything works again.

I've just reset all factory setting on all 4 synths and tried again, but its still the same!

Please can someone shed sum light, its driving me nuts!!

Well a few things to note:
The Radias has a option in its global settings to choose whether external clock comes from USB or MIDI. I think.

You've set the Prophet's MIDI clock to 'MIDI Out' according to your post anyway. This suggests to me that the Prophet is set to transmit clock, not receive it.

Not sure about the SH201.

Also the correct connection for your chain would be:
M3 MIDI Out > Radias MIDI In
Radias MIDI Thru > Prophet MIDI In
Prophet MIDI Thru > SH201 MIDI In

From your post at first I thought you were connecting the M3 MIDI Out to the Radias MIDI Thru, which would be wrong.

the problem is your other gears are on midi time code standby..press
"play" on the midi master device and all your other gears will sync up.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have the midi chain connected as you suggested x-trade and have reset the prophet clock to midi in(oops, minor mistake

The SH201 clock is set to receive midi, and the radias clock is set to Ext.midi, but the samething happens???

The thing is, this is the way i had everything set up before I was using Cubase and they worked fine!

Any other ideas?

Many thanks

Unplug everything and connect the M3 directly to your computer and load up MIDI Ox. View the incoming MIDI data from the M3, and if you see MIDI clock messages, then the problem is with one of your other devices; if you don't see MIDI clock messages, then the M3 isn't transmitting them. Also try going into Global mode on the M3 to make sure that the M3 isn't using an external clock AND that you haven't somehow disabled transmitting of MIDI clock events.

thanx, kanthos.
midi clock is what i meant to say, not midi time code which something entirely different.
yup. that is most likely what's causing the problem since the M3 was slave to cubase it
was setup to receive instead of sending-out midi clock message (midi master device)..

Thanks guys,

I have loaded up midi ox, and opened midi sync and the tempo changes when I turn the tempo knob on the m3, this means its transmitting right??

I have checked all the clock settings and they all seem to be set to internal, unless I'm missing something? but surely when I did a factory reset that would have put anything that had changed back??
Whoever, when I connected the m3 to cubase, I didnt change any settings on the m3 anyway?!!

I have been checking the manual and cant seem to find anything to help and been on to Korg support who have'nt yet got back to me, but they didnt seem to know what would have caused this at this point. Hopefully they will help when they do get back to me?!!

I am really frustrated know, this has got to be something and nothing! :?

If you are running out from the Radias MIDI Thru port then it shouldn't make any difference - there are no software settings that affect the MIDI Thru port. In fact in most hardware I've disassembled the Thru port is directly connected to the In port without even touching anything else.

Maybe you have a broken Thru port or a cable?
