Newbie question re: Combis

Post by lynx002ca »

I bought this board mainly for live performance at the moment so I'm really interested in Combi mode. Basically I'm setting up each song I play with a separate combi.

I set my global transpose to -12 since I rarely use the high end of the board but for a couple of songs I need it to be back at 0. Can I set this for a specific Combi? I noticed an "Octive" setting in Combi mode but it doesn't seem to do anything for me.

Thx,

Not 100% sure where it is in the M50 as compared to the TR, but it'll be under the MIDI settings; on the TR, it's a tab on the screen where you pick the MIDI channel for each timbre. You can set transposition for each individual timbre in a combi within a 2-octave range.

Exactly. Once in your combi, hit the Page Select button, then Timbre Parameters. There you'll be able to transpose by timbre, saved within your combi and won't affect the rest of the keyboard. I use it a lot to adjust to my singer's capability to reach higher notes. I also use it when I'm setting two timbres to sound on the same keybed, split in the middle. In that configuration you might lower a couple of octaves the right hand timbre, and up two octaves the left hand split, ending with two instruments playing the same octave.

Thx very much guys, worked liked a charm. I got to say, I am really impressed with this board going from a Roland XP-30. My only knock right now are the horns.

My experience with the TR (not the same, I know, but similar enough) is that the horns required a bit of tweaking, and proper use of EQ and effects to sound like a good funk/pop horn section, but it's definitely doable.
