M50 "Instrument Definition" for Cakewalk's Sonar?

Post by DaveMcKeen »

Before I "build my own" instrument definition I would be grateful if anyone has already done it and would share. I have Sonar Home Studio XL, version 7. Thanks!

Definition Files

Did you ever get the INS files for Cakewalk? I tried to build them last night for Program files A-D. Whatever I did it did not save. If I sure could use them.

No, I got the instructions from Cakewalk printed out and tried to make sense out of them, but then got diverted and haven't gotten back to it. Gee, you did an awful lot of work to have it not save. I did a complete instrument on a Roland D20 with an earlier version of Cakewalk and had it to not save. Pretty disappointing.

Is there something friendlier than Cakewalk? All I need is a sequencer like the original Cakewalk from Tewlve Tone Systems. I just want to play some MIDI files and assign patches to tracks.

Instrument Definitions

Post by lbranflick »

I don't know. I have always used the Cakewalk home version and then upgraded to Sonar Producer Edition. I've done a lot of work on my Motif ES8 with no problems. I like Sonar but haven't followed the procedures for creating your on INS file to the letter. I thought I could do it without the instructions. Keep in touch we are both evidently new M50 Users

Hi KIZZ. Go to www.cakewalk.com and in the search field enter "modify an instrument definition" (without the quotes). When I do that the first result it a paper on creating instrument definitions titled "How To Create or Modify an Instrument Definition". I have not tried it yet. If you give it a go, please report back here!

Thanks, - Dave

Fantastic! I've got it downloaded. I'm tied up today, but will try it out in the morning. This is exciting. Is it for Sonar? - Dave
