Selecting patches in gigs with M50

Post by shock »

Hi,

I've been a Korg user for almost 6 years. I've had a Triton classic, a LE and a TR lately. Recently i'm planning to buy a M50. but one problem that i've faced over the years that, Korg doesn't have any favorite function to store the patches i frequently use. being a hectic gigging musicians, this lack of function has always been a negative point for using a korg. Accessing patches quickly has been a major problem for me. But sound wise Korg has never let me down. So, i've started to consider Juno stage as well. But not too keen on moving from Korg. Is there any solution / trick to resolve my issue?

That was a big issue for me as well. I ended up getting myself a FCB1010 pedal board for my patch changes.

how do you use it? can you assign particular patches to each foot switches of the board? suppose a patch from combi to foot switch number 1 and another patch from program mode to foot switch number 2. And how do u use the pedals - volume pedal and a wah pedal or anything that you've assigned? i think the pedal board only sends midi data.

There are many ways in (all) korg workstations that you can arrange your patches so that you can use them in performance.

if you're using a small number of programs (in combi mode) or slightly more (in program mode), you could arrange your different sounds for each sound to be in the same patch number in different banks, therefore only having to hit the bank change button.

or you can arrange them in order so you only need to hit the 'increment' or pedal-program-up.

Personally I use sequencer mode.
each 'song' in the sequencer being a different scene. each saved song 'file' contains several of these, but I save each file as a different actual song.

for example I might have a song called magic flight. so I have MAGFLI.SNG, which contains 000:intro, 001:verse, 002:chorus, just hitting the 'inc' button to get to the next scene (note I am using the TR not the M50).

i've just read your post. i'm still a bit confused. can i program random prog and combi patches to different switches?

suppose .......

combo C065 in switch 1

prog A004 to switch 2

prog D123 to switch 3

Combi B054 in switch 4

sorry i havent read much about this pedal board. so asking these stupid questions. since you are using this board, u might already know.

I don't think you can switch between patch and performance mode. Bank switch might be possible. I haven't tested it. But you can just put a patch into a performance, and also store all performances you use within the same bank. That's what I do.

in the M50 i use the touchscreen, i put all my favourite program under the category User and keep always open the "patch browser" on these category, so with just a pressure on thee screen i can change immediately the patch.

unfortunately you cannot switch in this way between program e combi, but only among programs OR (exclusive or) among Combis.

the favourite patch function is implemented in the X50 and i really do not understand why korg do not place this piece of software in all other workstation. (so far the best favourite patch function ever seen is the one of V-synth...)

I tried that approarch, but had to abandon it since I found it hard to do fast switches. And sometimes I had to press twice to get the click registered. But I guess this probably has more to do with my clumsy fingers :-)
