Mac Pro in seperate room

Post by laughing_bear »

I am looking for some advise on placing my Mac Pro in a seperate room.

The distance is 8 meters.

For my main printer I run a ethernet cable, no problem.

But what about USB gear, such as wacom graphic tablet, and additional smaller printer that would use USB.

Further, what about the wireless keyboard/mouse, does that work over 8 meters with a wall inbetween?

Last not least, DVD drive, coudl I use the DVD drive on my mac book pro to install onto the mac pro wireless?

So if you Mac is in a maschine room away from your desk, I'd love to hear how you do it.

Thanks

Hi Bear!

Don't know if it can be of help...
But you can try to contact Stefano Barzan from Barzan Studio's here in Milan.
I've been to his studio once, and he's using all his outboards and his mac pro in a separate room...I'm going to send you his email address via PM (just to avoid spamming on the forum).

Hi Bear,

My main computer is in one room, connected to internet via ethernet. In another room I have an Epson color printer and a laser b&w printer. To send documents from the main room to the printer room I use a Linksys wireless router. in the main room, the router is connected to the computer.

Because I use specific fonts, I have to have a rip server which is in the printer room. This consists of a G4 with computer monitor and mouse/keyboard. Installed on the G4 is the rip server software. This is used for the color printer. The laser printer does not require rip server. Also in the printer room is another Linksys wireless router which is the receiver and it is connected to the G4.

Google Linksys wireless router. Mine is 2.4 GHz.

Then all you have to do is set the settings inside your main computer for the connection. I can't really help you with that part. You might need to consult with a networking person for the details specific to your set up.

Cheers,
Susan

Hey Bear,

any news from your multi-room studio?
It sounds a nice idea, I hope you'll get the job done.
Let me know if Stefano (the contact I gave you) can be of help for you.
