Hello there,
I know this may not be the best place to ask, but since there are many knowledgeable people here, I thought I should give it a shot.
I want to use my laptop for gigs using VSTi plugins. Now the latency is incredible, but I'm using the internal sound card (realtek) as well as USB midi connection.
I was looking into the EMU 1616 external sound card to improve performance.
Anyone familiar with it in a similar setup? What are the chances this will reduce latency from playing the midi controller? Keep in mind I don't do any recording, it's just for amateur live gigs.
Any other product that might be better?
Please help,
Regards,
Dennis
Anyone familiar with EMU 1616/1616M?

Hi!
Well, if I'm not wrong there are a few people around here familiar with EMu interfaces...
BTW, I think that FW interfaces are a little better for getting low latencies, beacuse they seems to charge the processor with lower duties.
I'm sure that a lot depends on the quality of the audio drivers, and I think EMu is not bad. On that side, RME seems to be the best out there!

What's your budget?
What PC are you going to use with that audio interface?

I don't really have a budget, but I don't want to pay more than I have to.
The pc is a laptop, it's a toshiba P4 2.0mhz with 2 gigs of ram.
I don't plan to do any recordings, it's just for use of softsynth with my band (stuff like NI softsynth and other VSTi softsyth).
I'm starting from scratch but I find it really difficult to choose what I need.
Right now I have the Korg TE with 2 amplified speakers.
I figured that I need a good sound card with low latency since this is to play live (jamming with the boys). I've tried plugging the Korg in my pc using the USB wire. But the latency is terrible, even with ASIO drivers.
Even if the latency was good, I still have to figure out how to bring the sound to my speakers.
So I assumed a good PCI sound card could perhaps do the trick.
I was looking the the EMU 1616 because I think that if I get a decent midi controller, perhaps I could hook it into the EMU, along with my Korg, so I wouldn't need a mixer to perform with both keyboards.
I was also looking at Kore 2, but I'm not entirly sure how it fits in all this. Meaning if I get Kore 2 will I still need the EMU? Can they work together?
I hope you understand that this is all of a big confusion right now in my head since I'm not sure what to get, combined with what, for good result.
If you have any suggestion I'd be much obliged.
ciao

PS On a side not, I have done ALOT of research on my own, but most people setup if for studio and recording. Needless to say I get lost pretty quick. So I'm down to leeching information from a generous soul who will walk me through the basics.
