Given that you've not bought the KP yet, perhaps some monitors would be a better next buy. But if you're happy to use your headphones then I guess you're covered.

Have a read through "Assigning a wave" on page 29 of the manual. It tells you how to assign one of the 207 different drum sounds to a drum part. The different sounds are listed on page 39 of the manual. 131-137 are all toms. Edit: If you don't have access to the manual, you can find it here .

Thanks for taking the time to respond; I really appreciate it. Having mulled it over today, I think you've convinced me that the ESX is not for me (at least not yet).
