I poured a few drops of 70% alcohol onto the top of the pads, jiggled them around, and all are working well now.

On the PA4x, I run the bass and drums to outputs 2 and 3, so onboard effects are bypassed. I use a Zoom B1 Four bass multieffect on the bass, and put it through a compressor/limiter with the Ampeg B15 amplifier/speaker cab model.
