|

Kronos Mk1 is Intel D510MO
Kronos X is Intel D525
can i install the Intel D525 and matching new ram in the Kronos mk 1???
Looking at pics they are identical in size and will mount one for one
cables look identical too ---so it should be a straight swap if you are running OS2.1--surely the OS will recognize the new board?
I have the original Kronos 61 and wish to keep it running out of warranty for years to come
Intel D510MO ia no longer available new--ITS REALLY REALLY HARD TO GET
however the replacement is for sale new boxed cheaply
7646 yen from Amazon Japan

Here is why--gentleman you need to do your homework and protect your Kronos as an investment
Im a vintage synth analog dealer 20 years plus and know you can get burned with spare parts so please listen to me I know what Im doing
7-8 years from now Korg will not have stock of spare motherboards
so you need to act right now --today before its too late
Kronos Mk1 is Intel D510MO
Kronos X is Intel D525
Intel D510MO original cost $130 street is now discontinued and will be hundreds of dollars as a spare part from Korg --eg $600 plus
Intel D525 is replacement and can be bought right now for $130 street
In a couple of years that will be hundreds and hundreds of dollars as a spare part from Korg
I want to stock a spare motherboard for my Kronos as it is the common point of failure |

I completely agree...Makes perfect sense to have a spare. Just in case.
It can always be sold later if unused. Or build another computer etc
Do you know if this Intel D525 motherboard used on Kronos X is direct drop-in replacement for original Kronos (Mk1)? |

Will the D525 work in the Kronos Mk1 ???
we don't know yet
I think as long as the powersupplys are same part # on both the Mk1 and X
The D525 should work at least on paper |

Isn't there a proprietary BIOS too? How will you get that in there? _________________ RD-800, Kronos 61, Fantom 6, MODX6, 01/Wfd |

There will be a proprietary BIOS in both versions of intel boards
but the idea is not to hack your Kronos Mk1 now but to have a spare main board
that you can take to your "authorized service centre" and they can install the proprietary BIOS along with the new main board in your dead Kronos.
Its all about future proofing yourself. A good example is Triton Extreme
If motherboard blows on the Extreme it can no longer be replaced as Korg do not carry spares any more. Unless your tech can do component level repairs your Extreme is worthless. |

I'm interested as Korg have already replaced my Kronos Mk1 motherboard within a year of purchase and I don't want to be caught out a few years down the line with a £3500 investment (original + upgrades) that I cannot use! _________________ Korg Kronos 88, Korg M1, Novation SL61 MKII, Roland JV1080 with Techno expansion, Roland D110, Yamaha MU80, KRK Rokit 5 monitors, Akai ME30PII midi patch bay, Behringer RX1602 mixer, ESI ESP1010e audio interface, Quad Core PC, Cubase Pro 9.0, SE X1 condenser mic.

Your local electronics tech can repair a motherboard !
More often that not, it's just a capacitor that's blown. An easy fix. _________________

I bought a spare D510MO on eBay a few months ago, new in box for $38...there's one on eBay right now for $100 OBO, and it looks like they usually sell for $25 to $75...I haven't been able to find out (from Korg or anybody else) if it has to modified in any way to be used in the Kronos, but I guess I'll deal with that (with Korg Service) if I ever have a problem...

remember Korg only stock parts for 5 years from date of machine as rule of thumb
I would expect Korg to release the bios to authorized service centers after they run out stock? |
