Yes, take a look at programs like Extreme Sample Converter or Sample Robot.

They allow you to convert the sounds of a VSTi into pretty much any format you need.

Yes, it's legal so long as you purchased the VST and you don't share or sell the factory sounds you sample.

If you create your own sounds from the VST, then you can share or sell those. You must create something unique though and not just a variation of an existing sound.

Yes soundfonts are the best way but you have to fix the soundfonts first. Sharp wasn't it you who found the solution. I know its on youtube somewhere that fixes the soundfont problem.....
