After having played the Kronos for a few days now, I came to the conclusion that there really was a difference between the Oasys and Kronos when it comes to the sound. Playing the same well known Oasys combinations on the Kronos produced, in my ears, a different sound than I remember from the Oasys. Until I loaded an Oasys PCG...

They're the same!

Korg have made minor (and in some cases major) tweaks to the sounds in Program and Combi mode (even if they're called the same in the K as they were called in the O), and that would explain the perceived difference between the K and the O.

I am absolutely convinced that they sound the same. Having owned and played the O for 4 years, I am familiar with the exact sound of some Combis. And true, to me they don't sound exactly the same in the K, until I load an Oasys file: spot on.

That settles it then.
Case closed Smile

Ummm... I think someone just gave his alter ego away... Quick, edit while we all look the other way! Wink

Seriously though, thanks for clearing that up. Glad to hear there's no voodoo software changes messing with the sound. It sounds indeed like they tried to do minor mix improvements here and there. Funny, because when hearing the original samples earlier in this thread, one of the first things I thought was "one of them just needs more work on the mix".

Great thread. My Kronos arrived last week. Today, I finished completely rearranging my studio. Over the next few days, I am going to compare these two wonderful instruments side by side. My thinking was that with the O and the K it would be possible to have more than ample effects processing available and be able to record combi's to audio tracks if desired. I've had to work some long hours these last few days and the prospect of having some quality time with these two monster boards is really exciting. Smile

p.s. Yes, I'm seemingly late to the dance, but it will still be fun putting them head to head.

I really love both the O and the K. I just finished a 2 hour session. My impressions were the same as some of you. It is hard to put into words(really a tough challenge to not sound stupid), but I think the O piano(program) has more girth and weight than I found in the K German grand...yet the K had a more delicate articulation. I was concentrating on completing a song, but I will, in the future, try to locate some common programs and compare. BTW, I am using the same mixer settings. Just a rough impression, but quite a combo.

But we already solved this!

Load the O's programs into the K, viola! Instant Oasys sounds inside the Kronos.

I was curious, when you guys loaded the O's program into the K, did you then play the O's program you loaded from the O from the O and the O's program you loaded into the K from the K, and then make the comparison of the outputs of the two? Smile

I am curious if that is the exact procedure you used to come to your conclusion?
I apologize about making you dizzy. Smile

The Kronos sounds good but it in no way sounds as good as Oasys.

The Oasys just has so much power ,weight and sparkle to it's sound.
The kronos sound just doesn't give you that WOW factor that Oasys gives you .
