Hay folks I want an upgrade from my current M50-61 because I really want to get into Piano and still want to have the facilities of an workstation. I have two options:
1. A brand new M50-88
2. Used Yamaha Motif XS8
Please suggest one. Thanks in advance.. _________________ Current Gear: KORG M50, Keystation 61es

i suggest you keep the M50 61, and then get the XS8.
because with the XS8, you cant get into the Korg Forums.

I can give you some reasons for both:
New M50-88:
- It is new!
- You're familiar with the user interface
- You can use the sounds that you've created on your M50-61
Used Yamaha XS8
- Yamahas piano sounds are superior compared to Korg
- It is a flagship workstation while the M50 is a budget-level workstation
- Better overall build quality (also a con if you want to carry it around due to weight)
- More professional: more I/O, control, etc. _________________ Korg Triton Classic 61-keys, Native Instruments Kore 2 (SW&HW) |

may i add.
with the 88 keys, its not too portable, unlike the M50 61 with its weight you can comfortably bring it anywhere.
i have a motif 6, and i think its 2 times heavier than the M50-61.
To think that the motif is just a 61 key, what more an 88.
but if portability is not within your criteria, then you decide.
but then again if you can have both, keep the m50 61 for gigs, and get the xs8 at home. =) _________________ Present Gear: Korg M50 61, Yamaha Motif6,

Yamaha XS8 all the way. It's like comparing brand new Ford with used Mercedes/Porsche. XS8 will be there for many years, it's no problem that it's used. |

As much as I love my M50-88, I would be hard-pressed to make the claim that it is superior to the XS8. If you can afford it, you gotta go with the latter.
That said, I've become somewhat addicted to the drum track and the touchscreen, which might be missed (leaving aside the convoluted UI on the XS). Is a used M3-88 an option? _________________ Korg gear: Kronos 73.

Yeah.. I like him so much and he always says, "Ďts just a complete machineee" ha ha...
No doubt that Yamaha's piano sounds are worlds best!! But I love Korg so much... M50-61's keys are too poor to me.. good for fast play though but as I am gonna get into piano I think a graded hammer keys will be good to start with.. Thanks for all your inputs but I am bit confused in between M50-88 & XS8 _________________ Current Gear: KORG M50, Keystation 61es

Why haven't you considered a good full hammer graded keys MIDI controller ? It will cost a fraction of either the M50-88 or the Motif, and you'll keep using your M50 that you love so much.
Besides, having more than one surface to spread your combis is Awesome. I know, I have 3 _________________ Martin Ocando

Or, for that matter, an M3? Same sounds as the M50 in a better-built keyboard with aftertouch and some other nice controller options. _________________ Keyboard Rig: Korg Kronos, Moog Sub 37, Waldorf Blofeld Module, Neo Instruments Ventilator II, Moog MiniFooger Delay, Strymon BigSky, Roland KC-150, Mackie 802-VLZ4 Mixer |

between the M50-88 and the Motif XS8,
i really think you're partial with the motif.
go for the flagship if you can.

Ever noticed the piano sound on m50 61 keys is somewhat thin and compressed compared to the 88 keys? BTW Upon watching alot of m50 videos on youtube, it seems that the piano sound on the 61 keys is compromised. On the other hand, the 88 keys sounds realistic and thick. Tho comparing sound on youtube is not reliable, watching videos is all i can do since the music stores in the Philippines are quite strict for product trial unless you buy one from them.
Feedbacks please |

There is no sonic difference between the M50 models. Only the keybed. The 88 one you heard is probably a different piano patch that the 61 used, or it might be passed through some effects. You'll never know unless the performer explicitly describes his settings. _________________ Martin Ocando

The piano sound will probably sound a bit different because of the exact nature of the keybed you're using. You inherently play a bit differently on different keybeds, plus the dynamic spread is different. If you play on a synth-action keybed, for example, it's easier to make a louder sound, which may be triggering a different velocity zone than on a weighted keyboard. I've even noticed that if I play a piano patch on my semi-weighted Roland VR-700 and play the same patch via MIDI on my synth-action Korg TR, it sounds a bit different because of this fact. _________________ Keyboard Rig: Korg Kronos, Moog Sub 37, Waldorf Blofeld Module, Neo Instruments Ventilator II, Moog MiniFooger Delay, Strymon BigSky, Roland KC-150, Mackie 802-VLZ4 Mixer |
