i have just purchased the KP3. over all i love this machine.
it has pro's and cons... obvious pro's finger tip control - x y
live looping and input. the FX, are so so... maybe not studio worthy, but definetly useful and great for live performance. the fact that you can be sampling something twist and wash FX - while recording a loop, then do your FX drop and run smoothly with your new loop sampled. it also makes a great midid controller as you can assign every button and the x y can be lit up and be upto an 8 channel mixer - all great things.
BUT, here is my beef....
for those of you who do not have one. loading and saving is
extremely slow. especially with USB(which one would expect from USB) hence why any big audio interface doesn't use USB.
shouldn't be a problem until you realize that the SD cards are not much quicker. what does this all mean??? well, if you are just a home bug it doesn't matter, but myself as a perfomer slow loading times really blows.
my personal observation is that. if instead of using big SD cards, buy smaller ones - basically one for each set of samples for your live show.
if you save all of your data it will as in a KPA file. when you 1st turn on the kp3 it will auto load the file set....AND GET THIS!! - way quicker than using the load and save options...
so my question is : if it can load that quick on start up, why the hell not while it is on????
furthermore why wouldn't it be designed to load as it is playing, makes far more sense, being as we live in the 21st century not the 1980's....
the think the boys at korg need to really work on the OS. also, the software often doesn't see the kp3 connected to my mac, and i have to reload it constantly....
overall i love the kp3. but to those who design these, you really need to take a look at your software and OS. this baby has sooo much potential.
yet i believe you have fallen short on some very important aspects and logistics that take away from it's wonderful concept.
thanx |

Good observations and tips.
Check out the Wish list for the v2.5 KP3 update thread and add anything we might have missed.
I send an updated wish list to Korg every now and then.
Stay hungry..

Interesting. How much faster is the loading time on the KPA files?
Loading time is my number one gripe. |

sorry my freind, i haven't timed it....
but it's obviously quicker. try it if you own own...
I am hoping that by pointing out some of these flaws. the developers will realize that it is more a firmware/software problem than it is a hardware problem - hence why it loads quicker on start up....
i mean i would be cool with the slow load times, if it could atleast still play
loops while loading. multitasking!!! very important |

i think everyone's biggest gripe is the loading time.
it absolutely makes NO SENSE!
i have a few other observations as well - area's i can tell could easily be improved....most of the kp3's problems or issues are software/os related..
i will post my idea's in specifics in the wishlist for OS 2.5 and on..
the unit itself is pretty decent. they cheaped out in the odd spot, for overall it's a good unit.....
....i know this probably will never happen, but do you know what would be cool?????
if companies began to make their software open source, like ubuntu/linux... then we could all throw our ideas and their would be multiple OS' available to the public, making gear far more specialized, and less limited. also far more solid. |

yep
the only problem is to find a big amount of time programming & debugging for the glory. Nearly the same problem is to ask musicians to play just for fun & free of course. Would be very cool.
Anyway, public specification is really a good idea _________________ di - soundcloud.com/BerimbauJack |

you'd be surprised....
if it was the public doing the code, it would develop much faster...
it wouldn't be just one person wriitng the code, it would be a community.
korg would still make there money, but the end user would get a lot more for thier money. and you would be surprised at some of the people out there that would have no problem with developing the software in thier spare time.
oh well, maybe one day money won't be the deciding factor in how these kinds of things develop. |

Actually, come to think of it my number one gripe is the fact that the unit stops doing anything when loading samples. If the brainpower of the machine isn't upto it, I'd still be prepared to wait twice as long if I could just load samples on the go.
I guess sample time is also an issue. If I could have the option of 2 samples with 24 bars instead of 4 with 16, that would be neat too.
I've heard of people who have bought two of them, and I'm starting to understand why - though it does seem a bit of a waste.
I do love the Kaoss anyway though. Its just so nicely designed, the body, the neato pad, how the the buttons lit up look like radioactive turkish delight etc. I'd marry the damn thing if it weren't for the sampling issues. |
