I posted this over at musicplayer.com the other night:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IufLUxtDp_M&feature=RecentlyWatched&page=1&t=t&f=b

Wow, what a drag... I was at the above concert - each man played in his spectacular fashion, but when they faced the two grand pianos together for the finale I wondered how they would mesh. The blues became the glue that held things together, but it was amazing to hear how much more "modern" Oscar started playing.

When I was in school in Miami in 1974 I first saw Oscar playing solo at the Coconut Grove Playhouse - talk about both humbling me and motivated me at the same time! Oscar was my introduction to jazz coming from rock in high school thanks to his bluesy licks and prodigious technique. I never subscribed to the school of Oscar detractors - sure he seemed as if he could do it in his sleep, but he was a guy who really did his homework and rose to the top.

Top albums:

Tracks
Any of the MPS "Especially For my Friends" series
Live in Russia
At the Stratford Shakesperean Festival
West Side Story (my first exposure to him!)
Canadiana Suite

I spoke to Oscar a number of time throughout my career in synths, first at Casio, then Ensoniq (he sent us a demo he wrote on the VFX-SD!) and later at Korg. He loved synths and seemed to buy them all. I so regret never meeting him in person.

Korg Product Specialist Bobby Nelson got the thrill of his career going up to Canada to train Oscar on his OASYS, spending the day together at OP's house. Oscar even signed a copy of his book "To my teacher, Bobby." What a thrill!

Rest in Peace, OP - you walked the Earth in tall fashion and have left an indelible mark on us all.

Another legend passes on. I was fortunate to have met Oscar personally when I lived in Mississauga, Ontario. Just an incredible human being! May he rest in peace.
